Default tire pressure protecting the rim?

I am running a 205/40 on my 17s and than another set of Goodyear LS on my stocks, would running about 40 psi in the 17s keep the rim from bending on a severe pothole or is that too much for the tire to handle ? also how many pounds are you running in your stockiess ? lets hear some opinions what would keep the ride , comfort, mpg , or maybe even the rim in one piece .

40 psi is fine in your 17s. I run 38 psi in both the 18s and 15s with no problem

The more psi in your tires, the rougher the ride too!
The dealership I work at, the techs feel that 32 psi is good enough...not too rough but not too low that the sidewalls look like they're bulging out. You also have to remember that as you are driving, the heat produced from the tires rolling over the road is raising the psi some more, thus creating an even rougher ride.

^^Great points to remember. 38 doesn't bother me tho cause I have a van that I run 75psi in. Plus with the Monroes, the hardness is hardly noticable during the drive.
