Default GI: Lexan Glass Kit for the tC

Hello Everyone there is a shop out by me that is interested in doing a kit for the car. Basically they would do 2 kits:

1 kit is all the windows excluding the roof - around $975

1 kit is for the roof- around $400

this company specializes in working with Lexan and can make these to be for daily drivers (3/16) or more for track oriented (1/8 ) thicknesses.

The above prices are just the prices offered for a single person, however they have said that those prices would lower if a group buy or a few people would be interested.

To give you a comparison in weight for the roof the weight of the lexan glass should be less than 20 lbs.

I have been reading about a lot of people thinking about entering in time attacks, and doing a lot of autocross and am gauging interest with this.

Thank you all, and have a great day.

I'd be more worried about it breaking into shards during an accident than getting scratched. Really a mod meant for a car that will only be used on the track for the most part. Glad to hear there is a company out there willing to do this though.

The Lexan that this company uses is GE's highest grade lexan, So I was told that it is very scratch resistant.

Actually the Lexan is 250 times stronger than glass, its shatterproof, that is why the use it in racing applications because it not only is lighter but safer.

if you're in a river, you're pretty much already screwed.

there's been past interest, but none enough to warrant anything in production.. mostly one-offs and custom projects.

good luck though

They are almost impossible to break unless you have a tool specifically designed to do the job.

Whether you are locked in a car immersed in water ... or involved in an accident that renders your doors, windows and seat belt inoperative while your car is engulfed in flames ... Life Hammer will allow you to cut your seatbelt, break a side or rear car window and escape.

You owe it to yourself and your family to equip all of your vehicles with a Life Hammer.
if i get this i wont be able to use my life hammer!

The good news about this is, that this company already is making it, I just want a group buy so that the price will go down even more lol.

The company said that with 5 people it will do a group buy, however if it could get 10 then it would be a better price.

If I can get at least 5 people, they will go over numbers with me, and will start making molds from my cars windows and roof. If I can't get 5 people then they will still make the glass for me, so either way its a win-win.

Oh and one last thing, the lexan that they use is shaped to oem curves and has holes drilled (by request) so that it opens and closes, and rolls down.

Recently they told me that they had a lot of lancers come in and replace their windows. Most of these cars were DD and not being taken to the track.

Hey since your a mod, any chance of shooting this over to the Force Induction guys also, I have a gut feeling that they might be interested in this.

Hahahahahaha For that answer, you will have to ask the Ferrari Guys how they do it, supposedly their cars come with Lexan.

wow taking 20 lbs of the roof would be great, thats what I'm most interested in.

According to Enginifeer, the entire sunroof assembly weighs roughly only 40 lbs.
Knock 20 lbs off that and there's pretty much no reason to complain about the roof anymore.

Crap I was thinking about Plexi not Lexan. I'd still be worried about a window now being able to be broken out in case of an accident. Most Lancer owners I've met don't care enough about life for that thought to cross their mind. lol. I'd probably do it for the roof or rear window but I'll keep my glass side windows. I think people replacing windows with a lighter material to save weight but still run an interior are kidding themselves. Do it all or don't do it at all. I think be benefit from a lighter wheel/tire combo would be more noticeable than lighter windows.

Wow sorry for taking so long to respond.... this week has been quite overwhelming with school and work.

I am planning to go by the shop, sometime next week to start getting some numbers run, and (with fingers crossed) get the molds started to make these windows.....

Whatever the weight of all the glass is in the car, expect atleast half of that, since the lexan is about 50% lighter than the glass..... ( I will get more concrete data for you when I visit the shop)

You could quite possibly knock more off if you decided to remove the all the motors that operate the roof also, all in all, your reducing weight, which is the enemy in the tC.

I will talk to the shop about this, to see what they have to say about these windows and safety. If your worried about the side windows you can always leave those glass and use Lexan for the back, roof, and windshield. It should still bring you benefits. Like I said though, these are all good points and I will address them with the company.

That figure is an educated guess from the shop who makes them, after they make a set I will get back to all of you on exact weight, so in essence it may very well be more than 20 pounds in weight reduced.

I will ask about whether or not these are tinted.... that is a very good question. I will get back to you on that one.
