Default Insurance cost wierdness!

I own a 2008 xB and a 1990 Eclipse GSX AWD (turbo)! However, the cost of liability and PIP for the Eclipse is WAY less than for the xB! Is that bizarre or what?

Looking at some reported stats, the xB (no year mentioned) is among the highest statistically for speeding tickets! Think that has anything to do with it? It's crazy, the xB is basically an econo box. I expected it would have among the lowest rates out there, but it's WAY higher than my turbo Eclipse !

It is the age group that typically drives the xB.

QFT!

My last ticket was for 5 over in 1978 and I get nicked more than I should because of all the young gits who have xBs and drive like squirrels...

From what I have seen older cars are almost always cheaper to insure then a newer car. I pay just over 100 a month for the box with 0 deductible comp, 250 collision, full glass, and just below full coverages for property/etc. I think that is really cheap, since my parents pay like 80 a month for their corolla and have less coverage.

I love squirrels -- gorgeous photo ! Yes, my last was "failure to obey a traffic device", 1-1/2 year ago. But that's about as low key as is locally available to the cops (outside of parking) -- nice enough guy, no complaint -- my insurance company regards it as violation free !

But, geez -- historically, the Eclipse turbo has a rep as a street racer (no, not me ), it's just amazing the xB is considered higher risk! Wow!

it also has to do with value. the kbb value of your gsx is nothing since the car is 19 years old, so if you crash it, even a fender bender, they'd say its totalled and just have to pay you the fair market price, which is nothing.

while with the xb, it is shiny and new, and therefore worth much more.

I'd expect the newer car to be more expensive for collision, not so sure about comprehensive. Collision wise, my Eclipse would be considered totalled at somewhere between $500 and $1000 damage repair. That means collision cost is almost trivial compared to a new car. That's why the liability valuation is so telling, it doesn't reflect the value of the car, it reflects it's violation/accident statistics!

Absolutely true -- which is why I'm talking about liability, not collision (nor comprehensive for that matter, but comprehensive isn't usually available unless you have collision)!

My coverage went down for the '09 xB vs. a '97 Ford Ranger.

My DVR (driving record) + age of car + coverage limits/deductibles + age of driver + length of time w/agent = great premiums.

Lots of variables.

Well, in the case I'm talking about, the only variable is the car itself. I'm the only driver and the limits and deductables are identical. As I said, I'm talking liability and PIP only! No other variables !

yeah, I was about to say, don't lose the car, lose the insurance company. Tell them that next time it comes around, you're looking for a better deal. I bet they get real eager to do business.

I took the whole "young driver" training course and open "book" test at 25 yrs old, and that brought down my rates a little. My old 95 Plymouth Neon was practically dirt cheap. With the xB, I pay about 500 per 6months, which is okay, but next bought I'm shopping around. I'd suggest to really ANYONE that they ask their insurance company if they have something similar to bring down their rates, but especially if they're 25 yrs old or younger.

I guess I shouldn't complain that I am a 25/M with a tC and my insurance is 585 for 6 months.

I'm guessing your coverage limits aren't near as high as postman's. Most people that compare insurance rates on this site seem to forget about bringing types and limits of coverage into the discussion.

Also different insurance companies classify the xB differently... economy wagon versus sport wagon being the perfect example here.

This is very true. It also takes into account what else you have insured with the same company. I have 5 cars, 2 motorcycles, home owners, accidental injury, and life insurance all on the same policy. I still pay pleanty, but I get discounts for keeping it all together.

We're the same, JB. It's always best to find an agent and stick with them. Auto insurance folks are like health insurance folks now...they share info and they don't like policy-hoppers.

A 25yo, in most cases, doesn't need to protect the equivalent of 30 years' worth of asset accumulation. I have to protect property & assets with much higher limits of liability, just in case.

20/M and pay $603 every six months here in Cleveland. It drops when I turn 21 in June, so we will see how much lower it will go! If I lived up the street out of Cleveland it would drop quite a bit... Sucks.
