Default Airbag light! :-|

Yesterday my Airbag light decided to turn on for no reason whatsoever. I ran to the store in the morning and it wasn't on, but a few hours later I had to take another drive and it didn't turn off after the ignition sequence. Any idea how I can turn it off w/o taking it to the dealer?

I don't have a warranty because the car is a salvage title. I dont think the previous accident has anything to do with it, because it has been over a year since then, and I haven't had any problems with the airbags since then.

What was damaged in the accident? Make sure your plugs under the seats are all still plugged in. One of them might have came undone.

The original damage was to the front right. Neither airbag deployed, so the entire system is untouched.

o.O? It was damaged enough to get it on a salvage title but no airbags deployed? Ok.

But seriously, take it in for a look see.

It's easy to get a salvage title in CA...i've seen cars involved in minor fender benders get put up on the salvage auto auction.

I guess I'll just get the light reset and see if it happens again. Hopefully it doesn't cost too much.

I was driving a few days ago and noticed that my light has disappeared. My joy was short-lived, it came back on next time I drove the car.

I also found out that the driver's side airbag was replaced with one from the dealer. I'm going to have to look into it, and see if a simple reset will take care of the issue.

I've got an update for you

When I was running the iPod cable for my F700BT, i took off the entire plastic piece under the gear selector. Near the bottom of that is a metal box which is the airbag computer. I probably touched something in there when I was running the wire. Not too long after this my airbag light came on, and stayed on.

When I was running other wires down there yesterday, I noticed that box there and decided to push all the plugs in to make sure they are secure. Ever since then my light has disappeared. It has only been one day, but it seems to be pretty consistent now.

edit:
dang it, the light is back on :-(

it happened to me as well. its a seatbelt sensor. its not recongnizeing that u put ur seat belt on. So it turns off the airbag so it won't kill u if u crash with ur seatbelt off. They ran a diagnostic on mine (warranty) and said they had to order a part. but the light is off now after being there. lets see if it stays that way. i think is going to be a recall or a big issue with those of us with 08 xbs.

Now that I think about it, I was moving stuff around under the seats as well. Do you know where the sensor is located?

I'd just unplug the light.

I think I figured out why it turned off for a few days. I accidentally shorted the power plug and blew out a fuse. The short probably reset the computer.

There are sensore & plugs all over the place. Seats, seat belts, pillars, dash area, several places out front, even in the steering wheel and column. We find the most common problems in the steering wheel and under one of the seats. Just a thought. Airbag lights are a PITA!!!! There are soooooo many places that can cause the light. There is also an "inertia" (sp?) sensor that is hidden somewhere. It tells the computer that there has been a problem (like an impact) and sets the light also.

this is no laughing matter...

I work in the ER and have witnessed someone driving to the dealership cause his light was on when his airbag went off suddenly and killed him.

Not saying it can't happen, just never heard of that happening without an outside source for signal to the SRS computer. "Most of the time", if the light is on, that portion of the system is de-activated. It would be an extremely rare event for it to deploy without an impact or without something very out of the norm being at play.

Can you imagin how you would mess your pants if you were driving along and say the pass front bag exploded beside you? If you didn't have a wreck, you would die of a massive stroke anyway!!!! Jeeezzzzz....:0)

Got my codes read today. It turned out to be a bad connection to a sensor in the passenger side b-pillar. Took about 10 minutes to fix, cost $40.
