Default Performance Tire Assistance

Okay, my current summer tires are getting worn down to almost needing to be replaced. Now, here is where I need help. I am running Kumho Ecsta ASX 195/60/15 on 15x6.5 wheels. I want to get 205/55/15 (wide) but want something with a much stronger sidewall. The Kumhos are great, but the sidewall flex is insane. These new tires might also go on a 15x7 wheel soon too.

Look for yourself. That line is from the sidewall flexing under hard cornering and rolling on itself. This was from auto-x this past sunday.

I really need a tire that will last a little while, (not r compound and stuff) with a strong sidewall that won't flex like hell and be semi-sticky enough for auto-x. I need help!

Thanks all.

Ideally, I would let my butt go for 3-400.

I don't know how stiff the sidewall is, but a lot of the Miata guys like the Yoko SDrive for road use. Some say it's not the best for AutoX, but it's a nice balance for DD/AutoX.

Hey just a suggestion but you might want to try Goodyear Eagle F1 All Seasons Thats what I run and the sidewall was the selling point for me. Carbon Fiber reinforced. Give them a shot were'nt to expensive either and they have good treadlife.

s drives are currently being discontinued and going for dirt cheap if you know where to look. they do have some sidewall flex, but def. not like kuhmo's.

i actually know where you can get a set for sub 300, but maybe i'll just keep it to myself until i stop complaining about how big my current tires are and get em myself.

There is nothing decent besides the Yokohama S.Drives in that size. If you have to run 205/55-15 tires, I would suggest moving up to a 15x8 wheel with a +25 to +35 offset to at least deflect some of the sidewall flex from most sidewalls.

If you're willing to go down to 195/55-15, you can get the Dunlop Direzza Sport ZR1 Star Spec tires. They will blow about everything in the 205/55-15 range, except for r-compounds.

I really do not want to upgrade to a new wheel yet, I just don't have the money. I am still searching. I don't want to change to a tire size where the speedo is thrown way off.

I've got General Altimax HPs on my Box. I've been really happy with them so far, but have yet to get them out to an autoX event. They do feel a lot more stable (especially in the wet) than either set of tires I've had on before.

Continental Extreme DWS end of story. Check out Tire rack for reviews.

There is also the option of running 225/50-15 tires. There are many r-compounds in that size that will work good on the narrow 6.5 wheels, due to their stiff sidewalls. However, those tires would still perform way better on a 9" wheel. But that's the thing. You don't want r-compounds either.

It sucks when there aren't too many sticky tire options in your size.
