spacer will just push your wheel alot closer to the fender,
more rubbing
where exactly is it rubbing?
if it just rubbing on the rubber shroud you can take that off or trim it.

take pics if you can

You don't tell us what the wheel width and offset is. It is the Combined wheel and tire that you must consider.

IF the wheel is a 17x7 or 17x7.5 with an ET of 37 to 42 then you shoud have no problems with a 215/40/17 - the 225/40/17 will add only .2" to the Inboard and Outboard and you can probably do some selective cutting to fix that.

IF the wheels are 17X8 and/or an ET outside the 37 to 42 then your probably looking at an increase of over .5" (over the 17x7 fitment) on the Inboard or Outboard.
