Default No clue about wheels and tires, please help

If I were to order some wheels and tires online from places like wheelsnext.com or wheelguyz.com would they come mounted and balanced? If they are already mounted and balanced can I put them on myself or do I need to take them to a shop to have them put on? Sorry about the questions but I am stupid on this stuff. I don't even know what to look for in a wheel other than 4 lug. Just a little heads up, I do not plan on dropping the xB so the tires they supply should be okay, right?

Since I am not dropping the xB can I go up to a 17" wheel with out it looking really goofy?

well our lug pattern is 4x100, so that will help you find the correct wheel to fit your car. if your going to be going for a bigger wheel you need to be concerend about your wheel offset which is how far the mounting surface that goes against the hub sits in you wheel. FWD cars, especially ours, have a wheel offset of about +40, so that will help you there. as for the mounting and balanced, thats all up to the distributor so when your looking to purchase wheels ask if they come mounted and balanced. when they come as a wheel and tire package most people have them mounted and balanced for you so all you have to do is go and put them on yourself or have your local dealer or tire shop put them on for you. hope this helps, any other questions don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks for the quick response. When you say +40 offset does that mean I need something 40 or above?

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.jsp
that will explain what offset is. If you move to a larger offset, i.e. +48, that will move the mounting surface towards the exterior of the car.

so if your tire/wheel looks like this:
Engine side - exterior of car side
I I, with the mouting point in between I+I, at +40
then +48 would look like this:
I +I

So +40 would be ideal. Anything less will pull the wheel into the wheel well and anything more would push it out past the fender, is that right? Now on the rear wheels would I still want a +40 and then get the one ton spacers?

correct about anything less, pulling into the well, and anything more pushing out past the body.

+40 wuld be ideal on your stock size rims. if you go with a *wider* rim, then the offset has to change, if you want the wheels to stay in the same position, relative to the car. Regarding OTG spacers, I'm not the guy to ask about those. I've got a tc, so those aren't really applicable to me

yea, otg shims will take a regular 40mm offset in the rear and "flush" the wheel with the fender in the rear. makes the look w/rims much better, especially if the rim style is flat rather than deep dish.

as for your question on not dropping and having 17's, it'll be fine, ive got pix of my xB w/18's and no drop:

www.fotki.com/jugnu03

you'll see the album. : quik fakt : you can go up to 20's w/no drop (though some interior fender mods.)

have you seen the thread by brownbanana in the sponsored sales section?? theyve got some seriously nice wheels.

or try bbist, since he's local (in CA neway) bbist has an exclusive line of wheels...

jmarks,

I would recommend Tire Rack. I don't know Roger but from my previous dealing with Tire Rack he will help you. Tell him what you want and you will get a garanteed fitment that has been my experience.
He will explain the fitment to you also; how wheel size, width, offset and tire size all must work together to give you that garanteed fit!
