snip down stock springs?
thinking maybe a little strangely here! bear with me, please.
-Am waiting for Goldline springs, still.
All lowering springs for the front end are "progressive rate"; have coils of the mid-section opened-up, made stiffer this way.
I drive almost exclusively on smooth streets. We have few pot holes in Miami because we don't have freezing winters.
I like the stock ride and mostly, want to lower the xB by 2 full inches, which will improve cornering ability as well as general appearance. Just by making the coil springs -shorter-, they will be -stiffer-, in one operation. 0$. 0 wait for backorder.
-that I am generally driving solo in a otherwise empty, stock xB gives me some confidence that I won't be bottoming out, even without a progressive-rate front spring.
Proposed: that I cut 2 inches from the stock springs front and rear. This -will- give a stiffer ride. This won't cost a dime except for my time, and a cut-off wheel.
Predictions? Will it be a stupid thing to try? Will also cut one inch from the front end's 2" up-stop bumper. Am really only giving up one inch of suspension upbound travel. :
hmmm! worth a try?

Yes, this is certainly true. If I were to bottom out then, definiately, I'd get the progressive rate front springs.
The rear springs of these various brands of lowering springs are -evenly coiled-, right? And so, why change the stock spring? There's a generous travel-space there, particularly because in my case I run stock-or, maybe soon, half-inch shorter tires. (195/50/15 Goodyear F-1.
I won't be rubbing lips or wells. And because my xB is unloaded, even to be stripped of the rear seat, there's not much reason for me to buy extra-stiffer rear springs, eh?
of course- cheap is cheap. Of course, if Goldlines get to me sooner than laterlaterlater, I will just install the Goldlines. They would be better, overall, I suppose.

I doubt that you will bottom out a lot... maybe sometimes when you hit hard. I actually cut my spings on my 525i and installed four new struts. It hardly buttom out but stiff ride. Also I have a lowering springs on my xB and I'm thingking of lowering it two more inches by cutting the spring. :D
Another question: do we snip 2 inches from the -uncompressed- length or from the -compressed length?
I suppose I would mark one front or rear spring, then measure the mate by linear distance from the end, to the cut-point of the "master cut"?
If you cut...let me know how that goes. I was thinking about doing this to my Tanabe DF210's to get lower, but from what I have read, most people advised against cutting the rears since they are smaller on top and bottom than in the center. I'm afraid that the rears may not "seat" correctly.
