Default Does putting rims on your scion lower the gas mileage?

I'm about to purchase rims for my xB, but I'm not sure if it's a wise idea. I don't know what it'll do to the speedometer and the gas mileage if i do put rims on it. Can anyone who has put rims on their xb tell me if there's any significant change. I was looking to get 18" rims.

I have been told that my 18's are the reason to my lower than average gas mileage. 26 lowest - 35 highest.

The only way your speedo will be affected is if you change the overall diameter of the wheel. For every size up of a rim you need to downsize the tire. Most places like tire rack and the similar will give you the correct ratio up to about 18". Any larger and you might have some calculatons to do.
As for the gas mileage, well, it depends on the size rim you choose and how much it weighs. If you try and mount 22" clodhoppers that weigh 50lbs each then your are having to push a lot more weight than stock so you may suffer in mileage although not significatly. I would be more worried about about the braking system and trying to stop those monsters.

Hope you have a better idea now.

Anytime you go with a heavier rim, you lose power and gas milage. Try to pick a lightweight wheel if you can. If you go from the stock 15" steelies (which are pretty light) to a big 18" chrome wheel, you're going to notice a big difference.

Honestly. Does it really matter? Just as long as the car looks good...

Yes it does matter... when you're constantly worrying about bending a rim AND losing gas mileage.

I was rocking 17s up until recently. I noticed a diff. in acceleration, gas mileage, and bumpiness. And that was all negative. The only thing 17s did for me was make it turn better.

Was the gas mileage substantial? Nope. Maybe 2-3 mpg. Over time that adds up though. Acceleration was a little slower, but in turn I got handling like it was on rails (in combination with my spring setup)

I'm personally going down to 15s with a big fat chrome lip. I love the ride and feels more peppy.
If you're set on going bigger, I wouldnt do 18s probably but thats just me.
If you're interested, I have my old set of 17s for sale right now. PM me if interested.
