Default Beware of aftermarket rims

Jason: If I do 18's what's the width it can take

Mia: Remember if they are not the TRD wheel package we cannot warrant them. So anything other than those would void your warranty.

Jason: Yes I understand but also with that my wheels have to be the fault of the problem otherwise the dealership can't void it.

That's a conversation I just had with Scion helper and according to her if you buy any other aftermarket wheel then you void your warrenty. Of course I know this is BS but this is frustrating that they actually tell people this. Have they told anyone else this or did I just get the one agent on her first day.

The problem is that the dealer is judge, jury and executioner. The "court of appeal" is Toyota, who has a vested interest in denying warranty claims. If they say that your rims caused the audio system to fail their word goes. The only out is through the courts, and Toyota knows that few individuals are likely to go that far. Even if they do, toyota has a phalanx of lawyers.

MAGNUSON MOSS WARRANTY ACT

US Code - Title 15, Chapter 50, Sections 2301-2312

Legally, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty on a vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused or contributed to the failure in the vehicle.

They have to prove it at the dealership that it's wrong and be able to show you why
your aftermarket part screwed things up. If they don't then they are breaking the law and you're right you can take them to court and usually you'll win. I have twice so far. Both of those were with a Ford dealership.

Also, I would think any rim the same size or smaller than the ones TRD offer other than the 19" which they have already stated they do not warrant would not be determined to be a problem!

I met Mia the first time i went to Scion.com, she suggested that i try looking here for parts and stuff. She was right, best place around for xB info. I also asked her the same thing, about vioding warrenties and stuff. Funny, i got the same carbon copy answer from her. I was going to order a wing through Ebay and save about $400 ( this was before i ordered the RS1 ) and she said that anything added not from the dealer would viod the warrenty. Usually though, if you go in with a cool attitude, and the service manager isnt a D*, then you shouldnt have any problems if something should go wrong.

Look at it this way, the Left coast guys have been running with big wheels, intakes, exhausts, you name it, for almost a year now and no posted problems. In the 4 months i have been here, i havent seen where someone installed the part themselves, and had a problem that voided their warrenty. So far, looks like a good track record.

Yes you can also do that. But if someone is ____ty then just refer to that Magusson law.

My experiences with warranties is this: YOU WILL VOID THE WARRANTY of the application (product/mod) not included with purchase of vehicle. Meaning if you go out and install aftermarket exhaust and in the future have EXHAUST problems, it will not be covered. But your overall warranty (ies) are not affected. Therefore, your bearings perhaps is the most they could deny you for if your only mod are the wheels and in the lifespan covered under the warranty with use of those wheels. It's a good practice to keep ALL of your OE parts to swap back in case of issues arising.

you guys are too worried. i understand there is serious bank invested and you're not trying to go broke if something goes wrong. however, if you run the big rims and something comes up, take the roughly 30 mins (depending on available tools) and put the crappy steels back on when you take it to the dealer.

Exactly, Intakes, Exhaust, wheels.. almost everytihing aftermarket that we're doing on this forum is easy to undo if something goes terribly wrong and you're scared the dealer will screw you.

So they wont be able to tell that you have had aftermarket partss if you swap back the stocks?? I always considered that option if I were to get mods, but I thought they had some kind of way to tell ... maybe im just a newb. Shiet .. if that works, i'll get my springs already cuz i was waiting for the warranty to expire =p

My dealer showed me the TRD rims, and then showed me the price. He ducked, but i ALMOST slapped him, it was close. Anyway I told him for the price of the TRD rim upgrade that I could get 20's from Discount Tire. He said go ahead. My Thundercloud came in today, the financing went through today, and my 20's got ordered today. The dealer can't wait for me to get them on so they can post pictures on their website. You've obviously just found yourself a shiesty dealer, I would report them to Scion home offices and make sure that gets taken care of ASAP. Then find yourself a new dealership.

The whole idea behind Scion, and their entire marketing campaign is customization. If that dealer thinks that home office will let them get away with that kinda crap they are out of their minds.
