What are the left and right smaller pieces for on the bottom grill in the xB?

If it's what I'm thinking of, the piece on the driver's side is removable for towing. It hides a threaded hole for the towing bolt. The owner's manual can confirm this.

Its strange tho, both come out, and they have this extra plastic on the back almost as if something might go in there.... Meh

thats just what I was thinking. I wonder what lights would fit. Id love to shave the stock holes and put lights down there

its quite funny actually the right and the left pieces are smalller ,made out the same material and cost the same as the middle longer piece..think the middle was like 35$ and the sides were 30 a piece

I think it is for mounting ability or structural rigidity. An opening that size may hve needed more support? just theorizing... If I recall, when i was putting my Grille Crafts on the design made sense but it's all very vague right now. Here's a pic with them out:
