I am having a little problem with the looks of my x. It seems that the track is wider up front than the rear. I was wondering if one can get away with having 18 x 7.5 up front and maybe 18 x 8 or 18 x 9 in the rear, to help bring (by looks) the wheel and tire aligned with the rear fender.

some use spacers to push out the rear to make the wheel flush with the rear fender

If the wheels I want come in 38 and 42mm offsets...should I get 38 in the back and 42 in the front? or do I have that wrong?

Absolutely. I'm running 17x8.5 +16mm up front and 17x9 +17mm in the rear. You could do that with 18's but you'll definitely need to roll the fenders in the rear. One of the best wheel fitments I've seen so far is the bB that Fabulous uses in their ads. It's something like 18x9 +18mm up front, and 18x10 +18mm in the rear. Keep in mind it's not a "set it and forget it" setup. You'll need to put some work into it, but it would be well worth it in my opinion.
