Default Wheel spacers and rear track

Does anyone know why the factory designed the rear track one inch narrower than the front? With my 17's it is very obvious. I am looking at spacers for the rear but I wonder how it will affect the handling and tire wear. There must be some reason why Scion designed it this way.

It's got something to do with preventing understeer. One Ton Garage spacers work fine and don't affect steering or tire wear so you are safe on both counts. They don't bring them out even with the fronts but they help make it not so obvious. Hope this helps!
