"We're going niche," said Jim Farley, Toyota's vice president of marketing... "It is the most distinctive and the most capable 4x4 in the Toyota lineup, and that's quite a statement," Farley said.

Toyota says the 4x4 FJ Cruiser has "a 30-degree maximum climb angle and a 41-degree maximum side slope angle; a 27.5-inch maximum water fording depth; a 34-degree approach and a 30-degree departure angle; a 27.4 degree break-over angle and 9.6 inches of ground clearance; skid plates for its engine, transfer case and fuel tank; and an available locking rear differential."

"It is the hardware the sets the FJ apart," said Akio Nishimura, the vehicle's chief engineer. That includes the vehicle's chassis stiffness, its two four-wheel-drive systems and "the radical combination of tight overhangs and substantial ground clearance, approach and departure angles."

i seriously want one of those. i have always been a toyota truck guy at heart, my first car (truck) was an 85 pickup, and my dad has a tundra. but then i bought my civic, and that got me into smaller cars, on to the tC, but i think i might get an FJ next.

does anyone know if this is going to be like all the normal toyotas and be in production for a while, or if its going to be like a 1 year production thing?

No idea. I've been looking at off road vehicles for a while. I like the new Xterra and the new FJ's capabilities, not a huge fan of the look. I hear the Xterra will do everything the FJ does and more, so it is very tempting. If I go on the cheap (which is likely since I don't offroad much) I am looking at a 97-00 ish Jeep Cherokee. Add a few aftermarket items to prepare it for the experience and it's a pretty good rig off roads and you could get one and all of it's equipment for under 10k pretty easily.

my boy has a Cherokee and did pretty much what you said. He's also buying an old POS wrangler to fix up. Cheap and lot's of aftermarket.

Who wants to go offroading in a brand new car?

i think anything toyota markets to young people will attract older price conscious consumers as well... i saw a lot of older people checking out the FJ at the autoshow and heard a lot of praise for its low price...
