Default Car and Driver reviews xB, 3 other square cars

The magazine reviewed the Chevrolet HHR LT, Chrysler PT Cruiser GT, Honda Element EX-P, and Scion xB.

Their verdict on the xB: "Exhilarating in its simplicity."

Few cars promise so little as the Scion xB and deliver so much.

Sounds like they just wanted a little more power out of it... that's what mods are for...

Default Pretty good assesment

I agree with the author, less truly is more. While the XB has less standard acceleration, and Power, it just feels quick, and smooth. It's truly the only Vehicle that could give me the cargo space/gas mileage/and feel that i needed.

Hey what's going on here. Wasn't this article posted on here about a month ago. I've written about it before and have had the mag for about that long. It is a great article with some good humor in it and it does cut to the chase as to why the xB was top rated. If you look at the breakdown in scoring each car, the Element came out ahead on all but one item which put the xB over the top, Hmmmm.

no conspiracy, like the article says, the Element looks good on paper, but its execution was a bit flawed. And there are just some elements that can't be measured, like style and functionality. Sure, the Honda has the edge in cargo space, but the design of the clam shell doors detract from its convenience. And we top out on the all important fuel economy factor and price.

The Element vs the xB is kinda my big army hunting/survival knife vs my swiss army knife. Sure the army knife might be useful if I went camping a lot or I was lost in the woods, but would you really want to carry that thing around everyday? Whereas I carry my swiss army knife everywhere and use it all the time.

Decent comparo review and I agree with the opinions and observations on each vehicle.

I enjoyed the comments about how 'happy' the little box is. :D

Pleased to see the xB come out number one. I really DO feel it is a cut above the rest.

I agree with the article, my wife has a 2005 PT Cruiser GT, and it is a nice vehicle, but my XB feels like there is more room for the driver , and much more fun to drive.

I don't agree at all with the PT review. I rented one and when I picked it up, the thing had 400-something miles on it. I drove it for 6 days and it was horrid. I'm about 6'2" and I had to hunch down to see past the rear view mirror and I felt like I was in a cage.

I've also had the chance to drive a HHR and it was equally cramped.

I've not been in an Element.

I bought my green box in Dec 05' and I'm just happy as a clam....only not being all clamed up!

I love my Xb. I considered buying an Element but the Xb is just cooler. Don't forget that they are two completely different cars. The Element seems to be a more off-road oriented vehicle. If you live in a city where parking spots are TINY, you can't beat an Xb. I think the power to weight ratio is almost perfect. I don't think the article could be fair because the other vehicles tested shouldn't even be in the same class as the Xb. Even against that, the Xb came out on top.
