Default WSJ: Yaris is all the car USA needs amid fuel woes

The auto industry looks a lot better when one considers how much fuel it takes to move a ton of vehicle weight. That measure has improved nearly 58% since 1975. The EPA figures that if 2005 vehicles had the same distribution of weight and performance as in 1987, and car makers had applied all the technology they used to hold mileage steady as they goosed performance and size, the 2005 fleet would have been 24% more fuel-efficient. Another way to put it: Americans driving 2005 cars would have burned up 24% less gasoline than they did, assuming they didn't use their efficiency savings to drive more.

This is where the Yaris comes in. The Yaris embodies what the EPA is talking about. It uses little in the way of exotic technology to achieve its 40 mpg highway rating. It just puts fuel efficiency first. The car's little engine uses increasingly common technology such as computer-controlled variable-valve timing to enhance fuel efficiency. The hatchback offers 13 cubic feet of cargo space (almost as much as the larger Corolla.) I got a fairly large framed poster in the back with the rear seats folded down. A week's groceries would fit easily, as would several golf bags.

The Yaris is not all the car many Americans would want, but it is all the car many Americans need. With a manual five-speed transmission, it's possible to achieve perfectly adequate acceleration from a stop light or onto the freeway. And the car's diminutive size isn't an issue for a lone commuter: In my office parking garage, I would much rather have the Yaris than the large SUVs I drove recently. Better yet, I could hope to do a week's worth of commuting on roughly six gallons of gas -- a little more than half a tank.

i saw one of these in person...nice concept but too small for me. I think it will sell great to the market it is aimed, but i doubt you will get any takers from those who are driving SUV's. The people i talk too, who own gass guzzlers don't care about the cost of gas, and its sadly that mentality you cannot chanage.....

expect to pay 4 1/2 dollars per gallon by summer.... and 6 dollars next summer!! for all the big engine buyers, forget the V8s, a turbocharged inline 4 is the solution.. better gas mileage with similiar performance..

That's not always true. My last vehicle was a full-size Chevy Silverado 4X4 extended cab with a big V-8. I sold it for a Scion xA and have never regreted it. I loved the truck, but it was way more than I needed. Now I love my little xA.

yeah, i sold my 04 denali......... was tired of paying 500.00 a month in gas, and that is when it was 2.50 a gallon. Not that i cant afford it, but i would rather spend that on something else.
I dont regret selling the denali, in fact it was a waste of money in the first place, overkill if you ask me
but most of the people i know who have SUV's or trucks dont care about gas costs and wouldnt give up there trucks or SUV's. I should have phrased my statement that way.....sorry for generalizing.

We just got one at our dealership, and I love it. There are some pix of a blue one that has been outfitted with 18" wheels, lowered, with a fin, and I can't wait to do it. The trunk has a huge spare tire well that a 15 would fit nicely in. The car only weighs about 2100 pounds, and there is a quite a bit available for the motor. I'm thinking that with pullies, blitz, and header to tip exhaust you should see 150+ at the wheels.

I like 'em too. I think the Yaris kinda makes the Corolla look dated (and I like Corolla's).

First VW rabbit type shape I've ever liked. I think they're going to sell zillions. I wish there was a way to pry overweight middle aged pre-divorce soccer moms out of their houses on wheels and shoehorn them into something like that.

I've seen both and test drove both... I'd take a fit anyday over the Yaris.... The best part of the Yaris to me is the center stack controls..... The front end drops off too quickly. The Fit is like a mini matrix. The engine is super tiny... I just stared at the fit engine and was like..... Whoah!!! that things produces 109hp.... it's soooooo tiny... I was also like.. yeap.. there's the headers and the CAI....
