... Somewhere in the South, possibly Texas

TOKYO (AFX) - Toyota Motor Corp is considering building its eighth North American plant that may be ready for production by 2009, Kyodo News Service reported, citing company officials who were not named.

The world's second-largest automaker is looking at southern US states like Texas as possible sites for the factory, Kyodo said. Toyota also wants to construct a new engine plant in the US, the news agency said.

While the Big Three, particularly Ford and GM, plan to layoff thousands, close U.S. plants and shift production to Mexico, China, ect., Toyota continues expand and open new plants in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

Even Honda just announced the opening of a 3rd plant....probably somewhere in central Indiana.

The UAW likes to refer to Toyota and Honda's plants as "Trans-plants". It may be time to rethink that title.

Obviously the American business ethic is not working. We complain that theres too much export but this is a prime example that, if done properly, you can thrive with American production... I tell you this, American auto makers have lost me permantly as a consumer = substandard quality inside and out.

i think the UAW did this to themselves...

they bargained very well back in the day, now they are too bloated with overhead and residual costs.

this outsourceing by the big 3, is the only way they can stop the bleeding.
they will prolly be put out of business before they can recover...

Gee, hate it for the union thugs.... I have to go into both union and non union auto plants in my work, and it is no comparision... The japs and germans expect their workers to actually work, while the union shops threaten anyone non union if they so much as inspect a piece of equipment....What a bunch of loosers...

Very true. That is the biggest problem the big 3 have. Getting rid of the UAW would make their cars much cheaper to make and the plants would be more productive.

I'm actually a contracted employee to one of the big three. I supervise their employees, and after seeing these guys sit around and sleep, ride around in golf carts, and generally do nothing because of the union, I refuse to buy any of their cars! On top of that one of the guys doesn't even have a high school diploma and his check, for one weeks work was around $4400!! Talk about overpaid!! There's why it cost $18000 for a neon made right here in this country, and you can buy a import that has beed shipped half way around the world and has way better quality for thousands less!!

Not sure if there are any updates but Toyota is building a plant in Weyers Cave, Virginia. They were supposed to do so years ago but something fell through and now it's back on track. I might have to apply for a job there in a few years.

Well the news of a plant in TX is extremely old. TMMTX will begin production in a couple of months. Also, last I checked Toyota had 10 plants in the US. This is probably including the Subaru plant in Lafayette, IN that they picked up when they bought control of Fujitsu (sp) Heavy Equipment (subaru's parent company) As for the engine plant, They still havent said where it will be but the detroit area and southern Indiana are the two closest contenders, at least from what the local news says.

Zombie, where did you hear about a plant in Virginia??? As far as I know there have been no press releases, nor any "insider release" to Toyota team members. Have to ask around when I go back to work Tue.

Now i'm not sure if they are going to be building a plant or not, seems like just rumors. Just google Toyota and Weyers Cave and you'll find some info.
