Front Brake Caliper Problem
I just replaced the front driver's side brake caliper on my XB today.
Thursday of last week I noticed the rim was darker than normal but I hadn't been able to wash the car for 2 weeks so I assumed that was the reason. Friday I noticed a little loss in peppiness and when coasting at low speeds like at a stop light or drive through the car would stop itself much quicker than normal instead of coasting freely. At first I thought my e-brake was up a little or something like that but it was all the way down. I disregarded it and thought it was just me after a long week at work. Saturday my wife and I were on our way to NC to get her a new tatoo. We stopped at McDs to grab breakfast and I showed her how it stopped in the drive through. At this point I knew it wasn't just my perception. We stopped for gas so I decided to take a look. I could feel the heat from 6 inches away from the wheel. The passenger side was cool. I took it home, removed the caliper and tried to compress it and it wouldn't budge. I cracked open the bleed screw and had my wife press the brakes to make sure there was flow in the lines, they were fine. Fortunately a remanufactured caliper is only $33.48 at Advance Auto. I put on new brake pads while I was at it. She's back to normal. The car never pulled to the left like I would have expected.
I thought I'd share this in case you notice any symptoms I had. You don't want to be riding around with a caliper that will not retract when the brakes are released.
