it depends on what look you're going for - VIP, circuit, old skool... but the general goal seems to be to get your wheels out as flush w/ the fender (rear usually) as possible. that equates to something between +20 and +35. the front is more like +10 and +20.
you can always get the sweet OTG shims to get you 10mm. so a +45 becomes a +35. I had this last example and the +35 just made it... for me. a +30 or +25 would have looked much better.
keep in mind, the majority of rims you'll find w/ a 4x100 bolt pattern and gonna fall around +40 and above. the lower you go, generally, the more you're gonna spend and the fewer rims you'll find. you can always go w/ a staggered set, but again, you'll usually pay more.
if I had to do it over - the wheel purchase, that is - back when I had more money to spend and a wife who was more than ready for me to buy a set of wheels (that's one set - for the life of the car - not many sets - in her mind I had one shot) I would have done more homework and paid $2K instead of $1K.
I am lucky, I'm on my second set in as many years and I'm still married. but that second set was like pulling teeth. don't be lucky, be educated. get what you want and pay for it. you won't regret the wheels later when you see some other dude's ride and like it wayy more than yours and the only real difference is the $500-$800 he spent to get some sweet rims.
