Default Tire Rotation

Historically radial tires are rotated front to rear. SO rear right to front right and front right to rear right etc. The rotation of the tire should be in the same direction ideally so no side switching. There is some question of the logic of rotating tire on front drive cars. Many fleets never rotate because most of the wear is on the fronts (pulling steering and stopping). I personnally have never rotated tires on my wife front drive cars for years. I have found like some fleets have found that I wear out 2-3 pairs of fronts or more before ever needing to change the rears. The theory is that you will use less tires this way overall. If you have special tires (like 18 inchers etc) where styles are important (they may change styles before you use up the rears) then rotation is probably a good idea (I will rotate the 18's on my XB). On my wifes Civic tho I feel I have saved some tire purchases by not rotating.

That is true ...there are varying opions on this subject. The tire rack link seem to be more common now as far as how to rotate. I havent heard as much about the same side rotation recently except of course if you have directional tires. The question in mind mind is whether to rotate at all on a FWD car. The answer is it depends

HISTORICALLY, yes. But no longer true. Early radial tires would have problems if run the opposite direction, but modern ones do OK. In fact, my tire brochures recommend rotating the radials from left to right so that they will wear uniformly. I rotate the tires in both my Camry and my xB from RR to LF to RF to LR (including the full-sized spare on the Camry) so the wear is uniform throughout for maximum life for all the tires.

if I dont cross-rotate my tires I get cupped tire wear that gets very bad after 10,000 miles or so. had a sitauation with an old Echo where I had to cross-roatate every 3000 miles and just assumed the old car had problems. Now I have the same problem not quite as bad with a new Scion. cross-rotate to even out the wear.
