Mileage keeps getting better and better
I have had my Scion Tc for almost 4 months now. The first few tanks were getting around 23 miles per gallon. I have noticed that each tank keeps getting better and better. My last tank got 28 miles per gallon. My car now has almost 2,000 miles and I have not changed the oil because I think it might be a special break in oil. Anyway these miles per gallon figures are all city. I have not had a chance to test out highway miles per gallon yet. My car is stock with a 5 speed and I use my Air conditioner about 40% of the time.
It should be pretty normal. The car has started to break in more. So things work better & so on. You are also learning what the car likes, where it likes to be shifted & so on. I would think after you change the oil, the milage might even go up just a pinch after that.
My mileages suck ****
17, 18.5, 19, and 16.75 respectively. I have about 900 miles on the car so far, all were city miles with A/C use 30%. I do drive pretty spiritidly but I keep it under 4k rpm due to break in. (100 miles to go
)
my mileage seems to be getting worse...
mostly because I seem to be driving faster and faster. since the breakin period ended and I got the susp. mods I accelerate from a stop faster and I cruise faster than I used to. but even with driving habits about as bad as they can be I still get 22+ mpg. maybe in the next couple of weeks I'll drive conservatively and see what I get mpg-wise.

I can't believe how bad some of your mileages are. I get around 29 mpg with 75% city driving and maybe 30% air conditioning. I have never gotten worse than 27 mpg on any tank and I drive pretty hard. Seems odd to me that one of you only gets around 20 mpg and the other around 22. I miss getting 32-33 in my RSX-S but my much lower payment nd not having to use premium makes up for it.

btw, what octane do you use?
im not sure the mpg but i know its worse then my friends grandprix gtp we have been comparing them and that doesnt seem right to me i think its my driving im shifiting at to high of an rpm for daily driving usaly around 45
I am almost at 1,700 with mines... had it for 7 week. Did an oil change at 1,300... seems like its getting better... then agian I haven't been using the A/C at all this past few weeks.
How do you calculate agian? I just filled up tonight and haven't drove it anywhere... so I will reset the meter.
Filled Shell 87 octane gas... can't afford it anymore... the cost for gas for tonight was 26.55 (full) and last Wed. I put in 20.00 (not full)

My first tank was 21mpg, combined. My second tank was 20 mpg, with a bit more highway! I am concerned becasue I have not been gassing it too much due to break in period. Am starting to think that when I start really giving it the gas, mileage will be in SUV territory.
I usually try and shift around 3000 rpm, I think that is why my gas mileage is so good in the city, 26-28. I think some people shift at 4500 rpm and that makes a big difference on gas mileage I think.
My tc has 4500 miles and the mileage is at a constant 18-20 mpg range, with about 75% city driving. I have an AT but I let it shift at around 2500-3000 range most of the time. Oil change was done at 3k. The mileage is not horrible but its not as great as i expected. As a side note though, I went on a 300 mile trip (all highway at 75mph) and the mileage turned out to be 30mpg. Go figure.
I just finished my break-in on my auto tC and I am getting around 19-20 when I am 100% city and if I do like 20% highway I only get up to 21-22. Will putting in a K&N filter and changing the oil help that.
Again, my car is an auto and I am in LA so I am sure that will lower my numbers somewhat but I don't drive with a leadfoot and the a/c is almost never on. Is there something wrong with my car? Shouldn't I be getting better numbers then this?
Could it have something to do with the fact that my car only goes 2-3 miles in the morning and 2-3 at night? It takes me a long time to build up miles with my tiny commute but when I do the mileage isn't good.

How long does it take you to drive 2-3 miles? My commute to work is about 3-4 miles and it takes me about 12-15 minutes. When I was commuting only to work, I think my mileage was around 25 for city driving. Now that I commute to school which is about 15 miles away, it takes me about 35 minutes, my mileage has gone up to 26-28. I think I can keep it at 28+ if I keep my shifts at around 3000 rpm. I do not have any estimates for highway mileage yet. I fill my tank every 2 weeks and I drive over 400 miles in that time.
Your in California? I am guessing your 2-3 mile commute might take 30 minutes because of that traffic? In that case, I can understand why your only getting 20 miles per gallon.
One more thing, I am keeping the oil in the car for at least 3000 miles just in case it is special break in oil. I think newer cars have magnets that catch the metal shavings. Someone here changed their oil at around 1000 miles and said it was really clean and was a lot thicker than normal oil. That sounds like break in oil to me, not sure.
