well, came on here ranting about a week ago when I read the instructions on the Yakima roof rack and it said that the sunroof could not be opened and some attachments (ie, bike racks) would interfere with the rear hatch opening. great. installed it anyway, and the diagnosis looks pretty good. the rack fits fine, the hatch opens fine (kinda close to the tire on one of the bikes, so it might not go all the way up once a longer bike is on, but it doesn't contact the bike trays). It even looks like the sunroof should open once I cut about 1/4 inch off of the screws holding the rear of the tray on. It sticks down below the plastic wing-nut, so should be fine, and will check with Yakima to ensure that there's no flexing of the bars. There shouldn't be as the bike trays are relatively close to the sides, but just want to make sure. Here's the pics, wind noise is a little bit higher but doesn't really bother me as it's still 10x better than my jeep was. Will follow up when i figure out if I can make the sunroof work. :D
still not convinced of the roof-rack vs the hitch rack, but so far looks like its going to work out pretty well.

Installation was pretty straightforward, Yak already has the kit for it, along with the measurements (44" bars, I think, towers 42 3/8" appart in the front, 41 7/8" appart in the back, 22" appart front to back, 3" back from the winshield), so it really was just a matter of following the instructions and making sure that everything was tight. There's a small gap below the wind fairing that I might try to reduce, but overall the whole thing went together pretty well. The trays are pretty sturdy, which is good because there's only 22" between the trays so there's a decent amount of overhang in the back.
Think that retail on a full rack is around $500 for the towers, fit kits, bars, 2 trays, fairing and locks.

That said, I think the look of the car goes down several notches. Roof racks aren't going to add points to the appeal of a small coupe. Doesn't look bad, but you won't have the girlies dropping panties on the street over it.

there are more than one pickup trucks that get better epa ratings than the tC does. Calling the tC an "econo car" is a bit of an exxageration. In initial price, yes. But not in gas mileage.

Well, no one said anything about needing a car to get girls. Just like you don't need a six pack and rocked up arms for that either. But, if you're on the beach, hella swole, you'll get some residual benefit from it, I think. The six pack gets more looks than the kegger, so I'm just saying, in this case, the roofrack is like the keg.
Oh, and the xB rack looks good, but if you painted some of it, why didn't you just paint the whole thing? Woulda looked nicer, IMO.

NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE. Roof racks ALWAYS make a car look 10% better. I leave my rack on my car for aesthetic purposes (though I do use the cargo box for camping), but mainly, it just looks dope.
Woodyear

Are u kidding, u think a roof rack is actually like a fashion accessory which improves the looks? That's crazy man, just goes to show different people have very different tastes. Some accessories don't necessarily make a car look any better, but to performance oriented people they make all the differance in terms of looks or even sounds (Intercoolers, blow off valves). But putting an enormous bracket on top of a coupe, or even a truck, in no way increases any aesthetic value. Instead , it breaks up the lines and dramatically decreases aesthetic value. It's like putting a huge retainer that like, straps onto the head and goes all around the mouth, on a beautiful girl. Sure it serves a good function, to fix her snaggletooth or whatever, but it still makes her look worse than the snaggletooth ever did!

dumb bikes!? hey you're dumb. BMX rules, i'm not getting a roof rack but i'm just going to lay down my back seats and put my bike in. if my bike fits in a lancer's trunk, it'll fit in a tC. plus my bike cost way more than that bike rack, i'd only trust something to hold my bike if i see it's value is more than my bike, that includes people.

I dont think he cares about what the car looks like with the rack on top. He needs to haul his bikes, i do the same but did not go that route (i use the wifes car). I actually think it looks cool. I like the look of function over form in most cases. You all need to stop caring about others car and respect others for what they have and what they do. I doubt he feels like getting bossed around by a bunch of people.
I think it looks good and nice bike! I am wanting to get a road bike really bad but they are reaaally pricey!

to be honest, I have no idea what pieces are needed, think I only got a clip for the back, other than that it fit fine. give yak a call and they should be able to help you out (there's a specific tC kit). I ended up hacksawing off 1/2" or so of the rear bolts and got rid of the plastic wingnuts in favor of normal nuts and sunroof opens fine, loads of clearance. little noisy, though, and gas mileage definitely suffers.
and no, I don't really care what people think as far as looks are concerned. ITS A CAR PEOPLE!! Even moreso, it's a CHEAP CAR! Putting a bike rack on a ferrari is a crime, and should be punished. Putting a bike rack on a 16k tC shows that Scion is hitting its target demographics and that the vehicle will actually be used to go and have fun.

Nah, not painting it, only addition was a decal about the size of the Yakima of the company I work for, Iron Horse on the opposite side. Don't think it really needs to get painted as the black on the fairing matches the black on the sunroof...

It got moved into drag coefficient because that rack anchors your car down aerodynamically... giving it a coefficient of nearly 0 or 9,999,999 depending on what you're measuring. Trust me, I took math in college. :silly:

wow, went back to this thread for the pics and realized someone left me a question. ooops. :)
hatch opens fine with or without a bike on it, with my long DH bike the tire rubs the hatch window on full open, but that's not really an issue. just need to close the hatch before taking the bike off.

Dante, that looks awesome...do you have any details on what you had to do to get the sunroof to open? Did you cut down screws mounting the bike carrier to the rack?
Also, does that fairing interfere with the front part of the sunroof that pops up?
Finally, do you happen to know by how much the mileage suffered? I'm concerned with highway mileage as the tC will be driven 100 miles a day on the interstate...
ThePerchik

The sunroof open no problem on my car. Just a matter of spacing. The front part of the sunroof pops up right behind the fairing on my car. I have noticed that milage was a bit down ona 200 miler right after i put the rack on, but i reset the ECU the day before so that may have something to do with it.

i just ordered a mtb and was thinking of getting a rack. i never knew so many people hated tCs with rack. why does it matter a car is suppose to get you from one place to another and if you need a rack to get 2+bikes around then you do.
I kinda want one that can mount the bike without taking off the front wheel...think that would be any issue?
