Default Rear door lift handle

My rear door lift handle is coming off my rear door. I have yanked on it a time or two thinking it was unlocked and it wasn't.

Any fixes for this??

You can take it back to the dealer if it is covered.

If not, pop the cover off the rear hatch and tighten the nuts on the bolts holding the hatch handle on with a small box end wrench. I can't remember if they are 8mm or 10mm. It's pretty tight in there, but it can be done.

or you can replace with a new chrome plated rear door handle from scionpro.com !

took me a comfortable 55 minutes for the installation--people can do it from start to finish in lesser time...

yes, you'd need a 10mm socket wrench with an extender to get access to the 3 bolts.

They come prepainted from the dealer. 4 bolts. Pretty easy fix.

I just replace mine last month after an employee from the car wash ripped the handle off. The bolts were still in the hatch door. I was ____ed and tried to make the car wash pay for it. I spoke to the manager who is a big russian guy, he handed me a card and phone number to file a claim. He told me when I called the number to ask for Dimitri. Well I ended up buying a new handle from toyota for around $90.

chrome garnish is even on xmas special....

it is a 10 mm deep socket that is needed to tighten your current one.

Default rear door handle

i'd say upgrade to the chrome from scion pro as well if you are going to jsut get a new one. if the dealer will replace for free do that, or if you can tighten it, btu if you are going new, might as well dress it up fo the same price. sometimes if you get enough people to go in on an order scion pro will give you a discount...check into it

That is one of my Biggest Pet Peeves with the Box.

Scion created the Weakest handle in the world.
It has 4 attachment points to the door. The Right and Left ends have
10mm bolts to plastic points on the handle. The 2 points in
the middle have thin tabs that hook on. One to a 10mm point,
the other slides on under the tab. It is very easy to grab the handle
thinking it is unlock (requires a double-click on your key fob). Plus
you cannot see the touch release underneath you are suppose to hit
first Before you grab the handle. A very weak design, I am a Engineer.

It has broken 3 times on me. The first time Under Warranty. The 2nd time
with tax a $100 bucks. The 3rd time I order a Chrome replacement from ScionPro.
It looks a little stronger, but, not bullet proof. A whole lot prettier on my TCM Box.

I will Post pics after a few more mods Next year.

People remember our cars are designed to be as inexpensive as possible to build. This means always handle with care?

I read a thread somewhere that someone used bottle caps to fix this probelm, I don't remember much else but it seemed like a cheap alternative that he claimed worked extremely well.

Here is the thread on Reinforcing the Rear Handle:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ht=rear+handle

*Note: this help on reinforcing a new or unbroken handle only!
IF it is already broken, you are SOL. Hopefully, you are on warranty.
Otherwise figure around $90 plus tax.

This is a Well Known Problem and has been Posted many times before for a long time:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ht=rear+handle

The Handle is a POS and breaks all the time. Read the above Post.

^^that's what I was thinking. I have done it a couple of times when I thought it was unlocked, but never hard enough to rip it off.

Guarantee you that if you use the Rear Hatch a lot,
the cheap plastic handle WILL break off.
It's just a Cheap Plastic Handle held by 4 screws and is
bearing the weight of the entire hatch as you pull up on it.
It will cost you a $100 a pop to replace it.

TWO Types of 1stGen xB owners:
1. The ones with broken Rear Hatch handles.
2. The ones that WILL have broken Rear Hatch handles.

I use mine all the time, no problems. Funny thing is that I even have a crapload of sound deadener in the hatch and it's even heavier.

I don't know about you, but the struts do the lifting when I open the hatch, so hardly any pulling on the cheap plastic handle.

Maybe, you are lucky so far.
Maybe, it's just a Big Coincidence that Scion incorporated the SAME POS Design
in the tCs and THEIR Handles are breaking off.
Maybe, it is a Big Coincidence that many are complainting about the
SAME PROBLEM in the tC Forums as we speak:
