Default TC Foglights

I really want to put some fog lights on my TC, but the price of the stock ones is outrageous! Does anyone know if someone is making an aftermarket version of the OEM or some other fogs that would fit??

Hella Micro DEs will fit in the two side ports on the bottom of the bumper. Don't get any Walmart or Pepboys fog lights. They produce too much glare to be useful.

Remember that these small lights have a specific beam pattern. Fog lights are usually shallow and wide. They won't do much in normal driving conditions because the increased light in the near area of the car will make you lose some night vision.

Driving lights are used for throwing more light ahead of the car. They can be used to supplement your headlights. But they are like high beams, don't use them when there is other traffic ahead of you. The Hella Micro DEs can be purchased in either foglight or driving light form. The housing remains the same, but the optics are different.

Not to mention they looked forced in there and seem oddly out of place. Im treating the addition of fog lights just like spoilers. patience patience patience. I havent been impressed by much of anything at this point.

^^^ couldnt agree with you more. i have seen the scion foglamps installed, and i dont care for the placement or the size of them. remind me of oversized lamps on the subaru's. where they may not look completely out of place on a wrx, they do on the tC. patience will pay off, i am certain.

panasoanic-

I have been looking at that kit myself but wondered about any difficulty in mounting because of the angle of the ports that you mentioned. I called Hella USA and the rep that I spoke to said that I would have to fabricate my own mounting bracket if I wanted to mount the Micro DE's at an angle. Could you please tell me how you did it?

Thanks.

I haven't purchased the kit yet, but I have researched a good deal of fog lights and I believe that the Hella Micro DE is the best option for installing into those two ports. They certainly are the smallest diameter high performing fog lights out there, though they make up for it in length.

The Micro DE lights can be either be flush mounted or installed using the included bracket. I think the Hella rep you spoke to meant that there was no way to flush mount these lights like there is on the Jetta.

Anyway, I plan on drilling into the front bumper and attaching the mounting bracket within the port. Of course, you will have to knock out those plastic insert pieces to do so. This is a good thing as it will allow air to rush past the lights, cooling them down. At 55 watts, these lights are just like a headlight, so I can imagine they throw off a good deal of heat through their magnesium casing.

The Hella site has instructions on how to mount the lights. There is only one bolt fastening the bracket to whatever you choose to mount it to, so it should be easy to get the light to point straight ahead before tightening down the bolt. Once that is done, you just have to aim the lamps up or down per the instructions.

The wiring, however, is still something I have to research. My main concern is if the wiring harness included in the kit is sufficient enough. Its no use going ***** out on this if the voltage drop is going to make the lights weak. Maybe something wired in 12 awg if the Hella harness is weak. Second, is to find a grommet to let the wiring through the firewall. I really don't want to get out the drill for that. Third, I need to find a nice, illuminated, rocker switch that I can flush mount next to the window control in that switch bay. The switch in the instructions looks clunky.

These are my preliminary plans. If there is something missing here, please let me know.

Ahhh I see how you are going to mount it now. I was looking at a way to mount it but still retain the inserts and try to get it as close to a flush mount look as possible. Guess I could just mount them then drill the inserts and slide it over the lights.

As for the wiring, I wonder if they sell just the wiring kit for the OEM foglights, Since the wiring and adapter are already there it would be easier than running wires through the firewall. I'm not sure but I think that since the wiring in the dash uses a 't' wiring connector, it would be possible to run the fogs independent of the head lights.

Ran into this like while looking for fogs. They metion their Hella 110 Watt Blue Projector Fogs as "Top seller among tC owners for a easy bumper opening install." Anyone have this particular set on their tC? Are these the same as the Mico DS ones?

You know... I don't like the stock lights and I don't think the Hellas would be bad performers, but this is the kind of thing that just begs for an aftermarket kit. I don't want to install a little light that just sits back there in a big cavernous hole. I don't want to drill out the inserts to fit them back over the lights. I just don't think it will look clean the same way the (ugly) stock ones do. They at least look like they belong there. I'll wait until someone comes out with a full kit for the tC, which will probably mount flush in the little ports like most people want anyway.
