This happened saturday night on my way to Lakeland from my home in Valrico Fl, here is the story- I was driving east bound on I-4 on my way to lakeland to meet up with some friends. While on the interstate I was slowed to almost a dead stop because a vehicle had broken down in the right hand lane. I was slowed behind a 1968 AMC AMX(beautiful car) which was directly behind the broken down car(which i think was a minivan or suv). Well after coming to almost a complete stop I flashed my high beams at the AMX to signal him to go ahead and pass the broken down car. Next thing I know I hear tires screeching and i look in my driver side side view mirror to see a headlight about 1 foot away from my rear bumber. A split second later I hear this loud explosion and im spinning sideways(90 degrees). Well to kind of sum this up, I was only moving 1 or 2 mph and a drunk driver driving a jeep wrangler hit me in the rear going probably about 60 mph. AND NOW THE PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!

one of the bottles he had drank, this is only a little sampler bottle but the guy driving the jeep had thrown out half a bottle of Jack Daniels out of his car to hide it from the cops. I found it because I almost tripped over the bottle, told the cops, and the cops picked it up as evidence

Hey man, hopefully you are ok, I didn't see in your post that you were hurt, so I'm guessing everything is cool with you physically.
As for the box, it probably can be repaired, but I would push for the car to be totaled. Looks like the whole left rear got pushed in (C-pillar, rear passenger compartment, axle). Also the rear door is pretty squished... I'm going to hope the insurance says no.

Yeah just need a new tail light and some touch up paint and should be good to go.. J/K

If insurance declares it totalled (which I don't see why they wouldn't), you should part out the stock parts and whatever survived. I'm sure many people are looking for stock parts.

good luck and I hope you get checked out by a doctor. A buddy of mine was in a similar accident like you mentioned, but the other guy wasn't drunk. Similar in that traffic suddenly slowed down and the guy behind hit him at highway speeds.
To this day, almost 3 years later, he still has pains in his neck from the whip lash.
They also never found the guy because he took off after hitting him (his damage wasn't as bad too).

Yeah Im fine, no whip lash or anything, all i got was a cut on the back of my head that needed 2 staples. And my muscles are sore as hell, but thats about it.

Unless he owns it, he cant part it out. It now belongs to the insurance company where they will sell it for parts to recoop the loss.
Cars can be replaced, people cant.

that really sucks. he must have been going fast to cause that much damage. i wish that could be fixed, but it looks completely totalled. i would sue him for emotional distress. if he wasn't drinking then it could of been avioded

We might have to take him to court anyway because he might not have insurance. But the guy was wasted, he didnt even know what had happened. He hit me so hard that there was damage to the front of my car. If you look at the picture of my left front wheel its almost pointing straight, and than look at the picture of my right front wheel and its turned all the way to the right. And he hit me hard enough were there might be some possible damage to my hood, and he made my marker light pop out. So like i said before my guess is he hit me going 60+mph and i was barely moving at all. o well. just remember, this is him before he went to jail o and this is him aftero. so i guess in a way i get the last laugh.

I gotta hand it to Toyota. The crumple zones they did in the rear were well done. The way the rear door and the rear area just crumpled, absorbing the force was nicely done. The rear seating area doesn't look that bad and the front seats and front door almost look untouched.
Very nice.
About a month ago, I saw a Corvette C5 after it had hit a wall doing a pretty good speed, ~40-50mph. Way back when, you would expect to have your engine on your lap, but this thing also really absorbed the impact really well too. The dash and interior looked untouched (besides the blownout glass). You could clearly see how the front fenders bent, along with other items, to absorb the impact. The guy also walked away from that crash too.

Why didn't the air bags go off and were you wearing your seatbelt?
I have seen a few people where the airbags did not pop up and they probably should have, I can say however that it makes me feel even safer seeing how these boxes handle crashs. My main problem with compact cars has always been getting in an accident and these look like they hold up pretty good.
dgHotLava
11-23-2004, 04:46 PM
air bags that deploy in front of you do not help in a rear-ender...
airbags will only deploy if multiple sensors detect rapid or sudden changes (negative forces). the signals from one or more sensors is compared to the rest of the cars signals. when a few of the sensor give an impact type signal and the rest do not - the airbags will deploy...
so airbags would not have helped in this accident...

Holy hell- I had almost the exact same thing happen to me a few months ago. I had a new honda civic (don't give me ____- just let it go... ) and got hit hard from behind and pushed into oncoming traffic where I was hit just off of head on by another car going 45. My two subs in the trunk were thrown 100 feet from the car! I walked away. Say what you want about Honda, but that ____ saved my life. Anyway, they totalled out my Honda, paid it off, and I bought my tC (blessing in disguise, right! 8) )... Anyway, I'd bet $$ your frame is fubar, so pressure the guy's insurance to total the vehicle out. Here are pics of my dead honda:
and PMDJoe, it most definately IS a blessing in disguse! :D

Glad to hear your okay... I'm still having back problems 3 weeks after my Lava got rearended by that Damn "18wheela Scion Killa"....Yep, it's totaled... Just got the word from the 18wheelers insurance yesterday that mine is bieng "totaled out" and this one has a little bit more than what mine had, see link to pics below.....Mine wasn't that bad due to the fact that I was doing about 40mph and the 18wheeler was doing about 65mph so it was really about 25mph impact... But this guy was almost at a dead stop which put his with much more damage... So if they considered mine a total then this guys most definately is.......And YES, if they do total it out then the Insurance Co. ownes it but before they auction it off you can opt. to buy the vehicle from them at a very minimal price to part it out yourself....L8R guys...

From what I can tell from that information is that he spent two days in jail before he made bail. He still gets a nice little trial, and with refusing a breathalyzer, they shouldn't go too easy on him.

its good that you are alright. since you can always get a new car. and who is your insurer?
i have a question for those of you who had their car declared as totalled..
incase you were financing/leasing, did you have gap insurance? if yes then how much was your down payment? if not then why not? and who was your insurer??
i am thinking about getting the gap insurance but i have read that if you have about 20% downpayment then you really don't need gap.. i had financed $15,000 while $3000 was down payment plus i also ended up spending additional $4,000 on accessories after i bought my tc. so what do you ppl suggest??

It was worth it to me.

gap will pay the difference between the car's value as determined by your insurance and the amount left on your loan, INCLUDING your deductible
Good description.
Check the terms of your financing. Some lease's have gap insurance included- mine did. Believe me- that was nice to hear after the accident. Honda provided the gap insurance as a part of their lease and that covered the difference. I was slightly ahead on my mileage so I had to pay a bit for that, so when all was said and done, I owed a grand total of $94. Not bad to get out free and clear (they even covered the negative equity I wrapped up into the lease- which is never a good idea, but I had to do it).
What you do NOT want to do is buy gap insurance from the dealer. There are lots of scams out there where they roll-in gap insurance and charge you through the roof for it. If the terms of your lease or financing don't include gap insurance check with your auto insurer. Don't believe a dealer if they tell you that you HAVE to have it- that's bull____ too.

I'd call that a total for sure. Too many panels completely destroyed to repair.
Even if it could be, I wouldn't want to drive a car that had been so severely bent!

i was gonna part out just about everything i could, hood, headlights, front springs, engine, tranny, ect, and sell them all for a lil extra cash for my next car. But since i didnt have the title i technically didnt own the car (the bank did) and now the insurance has it so i cant do anything about it.
edit: I have the stock springs if anyone wants them. they have about 3500 miles on them. I also have the TRD short throw shifter, that i MIGHT be selling, I only had it installed for about 2 weeks, all depends on if i get another box, dont get me wrong, i loved the thing, but i want something a lil peppier and i cant sit comfotably in the tc.

It's good that you are ok. I say you should sue him to get what you are due. Otherwise the insurance or he will just pay off the loan on the car and you are stuck having to buy a new one from scratch. Fair is fair, you should be back in the same situation or better as before the accident.

Thats odd.. i remember an accident involving some guy in a corvette, it was in front of my school. He was doing around 50 or so, lost control and took a tree head on. I saw the aftermath.. there almost nothing there The damn car looked like it evaporated.. the tree had a black scuff mark and the poor guy lost his life.
