Default Last word on tranny oil please?

I have been reading on tranny oils until my eyes hurt and couldn't read any more. My head is gonna explode. And the differences between auto and manual fluids. I have read some folks like the Amsoil, some like the royal purple, and some like mobile1(?)

The only dealer that has Amsoil is like 25miles away. So to even go on line and order it would be more expensive then driving the 25miles.

I have a buddy that works for a Nappa auto dealer a few minutes from me where they sell Royal Purple Max ATF for my automatic 05 XB. So from a time stand point and a $$ stand point it would seem my best bet. Especially if I wil be doing this every 5k and 30k miles. For my XB and my wifes XA. If given the same choice would you go with it also?

Also I have read to measure what comes out, and put that same amount back in, correct?

last question, I know to replace the washer on the motor oil drain plug, does the tranny plug washer need to be replaced also?

Thanks for all the help folks it means a lot to me! ( i have worked on my other cars before but never a XB or XA)

I would say we would all like to use the best fluids in our vehicles, but really is availablitiy & cost denote what we actually use. Certainly Royal Purple is an appropriate substitute since the Amsoil is not readily available.
As for the drain plug gasket on anything, taking into account the gasket is probably a $1, just replace.
Measuring what came out & putting back the same is a good start, but make sure you check the level properly after to verify enough was put back in.

Awesome, thank you.

1 more if I may, I have read that there is no need to really pull the pan down on the tranny because the filters(screens) in these cars last up to about 100k miles correct? So this is something I can skip? Just drain and fill correct?

You can just drain/fill if you wish. That's what most of the dealers around here do unless you get the flush. How often are you planning on doing this? I personally dropped the pan on my wifes 05 @ 30K so I could clean the screen & magnets. I'll do the same thing on my 06 in a couple weeks. I'm using the Toyota T-IV though. Good luck!

I currently have 42k miles on my 05 XB. At 30k the dealer did my first tranny oil change. So now at 60k I want to do this one myself and save a ton of cash. Should i take it back to them and let them flush it @ 60k and then at 90k do it myself? Or I do it at 60k and let them flush it and pull the pan and such at 90k?

I think if you are planning to change it on a regular basis you should not need a flush; My plan is a drain & fill every 30k. That is about every 2 years for the amount of driving we do. I drop the pan and clean the magnets too. If I get to the second change (60k) and the magnets are pretty clean, I may just start dropping the pan every OTHER change. I won't know that until one of the cars hits 60k though.
