Default low fuel light

I'm trying to get a feel for how good of fuel mileage I can expect by tracking how many miles I get to a tank of gas. I have searched the manual and can't find anything that tells me how much fuel is left in the tank when the low fuel light comes on. Any tips? Thanks!!

I wouldn't trust the light. The other night I was driving on a flat highway and the light came on. A few minutes later the light went off. I few minutes after that the light came back on and stayed on until I gassed up.

I would never wait for the light to come on. Once I hit 1/4 of a tank I fuel up. There is so much crap in the gas anymore that it will settle to the bottom of your tank, and once you get down to that last gallon or so your just sucking that crap right into your fuel injectors.

The crud will go to the bottom with a fillup unless you have sufficient agitation. The fuel pickup most likely will be near the bottom unless someone has come up with a handy floating pickup. I once drove away from a pump in a Jeep after fillup and the Jeep died in the middle of the street from water intake. That upset a bunch of people as the traffic backed up. The drivers blamed me and not the service station operator. It took several miles of driving before the water was completely cleared from the system.

My light comes on at 9 gals, and the manual states there is a 12 gal capacity.

You'll have an easier time calculating your mileage by using your fill-ups. Start with a full tank and drive until you get to the point where you feel you need to fill-up. Then make note of the miles and how many gallons it takes to refill the tank. It's usually best to try and use the same station and pump as the first fillup so the tank will be closer to the same amount of fuel. Then divide the miles by the gallons and you have your MPG.

Wow. I've been below a 1/4 tank and never had mine go on yet. I usually try to fill up around 1/4 tank.

Great point, and one I try to live by.

I had the light come on once, and the gauge was reading just below the ¼ line. I forget how much I had to put in, but I think it was around 9 gals. Maybe less?

OOPs I read that wrong I thought you meant you had 9 gallons left, not 9 gallons used

When driving across the desert you don't always have the luxury of filling up at 1/4 tank. It also seems that the fuel efficiency goes up after the last half of the tank. This is something I noticed when I filled up at 7 gals, instead of about 9 gal. I noticed that my mpg was 23 instead of my standard 28. Again I suppose I have not had the car long enough to really judge yet.

i think my only complain is that the capacity is not big enough. I must agree though that its less money you have to pump

Everyone is correct on the fact that you should not let the light come on...But I do...hahaha

Also as everyone stated the light comes up at around 9 gallons..meaning that you should have about 1 1/2 gallons or 2 left.

:D

BTW...This has been discussed a few times:
