Default Looking to buy an xB. Need some tried and tested info!

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to pick up a 1st gen. automatic xB. Since I dont know anyone that owns one I cannot bug them with questions, so I'll bug you guys

Just looking for experience with Pros and Cons.

City fuel milage
Highway fuel milage
Expensive repairs if any
Cautions to look out for
What NOT to do
How's it in the winter
etc...

Any experienced from tried and tested owners would be great! Just going for a daily driver that's going to save gas. My Subaru WRX isn't fuel friendly since I drive 70kms everyday for work. 300WHP FTW.. fuel milage in return FTL.

Thanks in advance.

Vince

I love my xB. I do alot of various driving and can still afford it. At 4.05 a gallon it take roughly $37.00 dollars to fill up. The only thing to watch out for is the VSC Trac light up thingy with the "older" xB's. I have a 06 so yeah. The standard tires are okay in the winter but a beefier tire would help. The repair and up-keep cost are low and the vehicle is easy to work on if you have some mechanical knowledge............oh and to thread jack.......post some pics of the WRX!

I'm getting 28-32 roughly, but i am a little heavy on the skinny pedal. like any used car purchase, make sure you check it out good, preferebly by an independant mechanic if your not comfy with your skills. If you buy a "certified" pre-owned from a Scion dealer, it includes a 100K mile warantee, but your gonna pay substantially more than if you picked one up from a private party. I have 4 studs on stock steelies i run in the winter, and it goes like a champ! Last I heard, the XB was 3rd on the list of best resale value, behind Prius and minis. it was also listed on the top 20 future collectable cars. And finally, you have access to an incredible amount of knowledge on this site, and lots of people that go out of their way to help out when you need it.

Good luck

gas mileage all depends on how you drive.

i've heard of good drivers getting close to 40mpg consistently but there are some not so good drivers out there than can't get them to 30mpg. all in how you drive considering the mpg.

So wait it costs approx. $37 from emplty to full ?? Versus the $70 I pay for the WRX right now lol. It's looking nicer already.

How big is the gas tank on the xB?

What the VSC Trac light all about?

I'm a mechanic so it's all good for DIY repairs.

Oh yeah fo rthe ones who asked for it here it is

Default Scion xB

I have driven an '06 xB for the past 2 years. I have put on 71,500 miles. I live in Lansing Michigan, work in Ann Arbor - 57 miles one way, every day of the week. Average about 33-34 mpg. In the winter, that number takes a little dip.
I have had no mechanical problems. It is a manual. I had the dealer install an aftermarket cruise. NEEDED. I do my own oil (3.5 qts of 5w30), tire rotates, filters,......
The fuel tank is 12.5, I believe. The low fuel light comes on, and I can usually test my nerves for 35 to40 miles before stopping to refill . I have recently loaded it with lots of construction tools, and drove through Canada to New York. I forgot my passport/birth cirtificate, so I drove speed limit of 100k (60 mph) - didn't want to get caught without my papers. People passed me continuously, I didn't care - wasn't in a hurry to get there. Over the 520 miles, I got 35 mpg.
It is a bit noisy in the cab. You could install insulation (threads on this site are good for that). I just turn up the radio . I like how the seat is. Not low like a recliner; more upright - which helps my back/posture. Keeps me a bit more alert also. Excellant 360 vision. My golf clubs fit in the back, crossways (couldn't do that in a Mini - sniff). I run my steelie, All Season tires all year - its an economy car for me, not a show piece.
It is REAL fun to corner with; even at moderate speeds. Like driving a go-cart!

BEST commuter car I've ever owned. Good mileage (33-35 winter and sometimes low 40s summer); low maintenance (oil changes only for 20-some k-miles); excellent snow driver (with BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires instead of stock) ; more fun-per-mile than any other car I've owned (except the '73 240Z that I wish I still had); lots of passenger and hauling space (for a car its size); a bit on the noisy side (turn up the radio!); vulnerable windshield (toooo dang vertical -- but part of The Look); spartan instrumentation (added a Scan Gauge) and funky looks (and I LIKE it!) . . . .

Also, if you don't like attention, don't get this car. I get more comments than I've gotten about any other vehicle, save my '46-'56-'66 Harley bobber.

GO FOR IT!

Look to change the stock tires (if that's what you get in the purchase) for better safety/performance. They slip a little too easily, imo.
