Haha no worries I was still gushing over your slider shots and my gf was like “wtf is editied” so I googled it to see if it was some photo term I didn’t know and she says “yeah, it’s not a word” lol. I’m sure most people haven’t noticed.

Advice: Buy a Canon. :)

Turn on AE lock. That way the exposure isnt constantly changing. And use aperture priority so you can adjust how dark or bright it is by turning the dial and changing the lens aperture.

Premiere is great. I'm not knowledgeable enough to use it to it's full potential. Combined with After Effects it can be pretty amazing. I just don't need all of that power yet. So it's great if you're going to buy it because it will always be valuable and significant, IMO.

With that being said, I wish I went with something a little easier to use like Sony Vegas. I feel like I could get more done in less time. But, I got the hookup on the entire CS5 suite so I am not complaining.

I have a friend who is a master fish tank builder. He doesn't literally build the tanks (though he could) but I mean he builds the ecosystem for the fish to live in. If I was ever to have a large 150+ gallon setup, he'd be the guy I call to get it going and make it look farking beautiful. Because he is so anal-retentive about keeping his tanks clean, they are a pleasure to shoot in.

Here's a puffer he has in a 100+ gallon tank.

If any Nikon users are interested in buying a brand new Vivitar 383 hot shoe flash, for dirt cheap, let me know! I've had this sitting around and never used it. I bought it to replace my old Vivitar flash that I broke. It's a cheap alternative to the SB-600. I enjoyed it while I had it. It also works great as a slave with a trigger. That's how I mostly used it.

i have a question/need opinions from you guys. im ready to bite the bullet and buy photoshop/some type of editing software for picture/video editing.

ive always been confused when it came to PS and all that jazz, im looking at..

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 & Premiere Elements 10 for $119, 2 in 1 package. (i also see that theres an "upgrade version"? any difference?)

or

Adobe Lightroom 3 for $299

i want something easy to use, but also capable of making pictures look great.

what do you guys suggest??

Roller_Toaster
11-20-2011, 02:15 PM
Lightroom3 (which I have) does not support any type of video editing. If it did, I would probably never buy another adobe product :D

Jasper Ash
11-20-2011, 03:10 PM
I think Lightroom is easier to use for photo editing. It's more to-the-point than photoshop is. But with photoshop you can do a lot more, graphics and photo manipulation, etc. Photoshop and Premiere will take time to get used to. But if you spend some time with it you'll figure it out quickly.

I'd suggest the Photoshop/Premiere elements package. But for video, look into other programs like Sony Vegas. Try the demos. They might suit your style.

LR3 was at $150 for two weeks. Looks like it just ended. I see it's @ $270 on BHPhotovideo.com which is cheaper than the $299 it was at before the 50% off sale.

I don't know... Not if the rumored D800 is $3,899. I seriously doubt many D700 owners are going to ante up. At least, from what I've been reading on all the forums I frequent.

Depends. They serve different purposes. The 1Dx might turn out to be more of a low-light monster than the 3Ds was when it was introduced. If the D800 comes out spec'd like Pete @ Nikonrumors thinks it will, it will be a commercial and landscape camera. Which means logic dictates that there will be a camera to fill the void between pro DX and the D800. There's a couple different ways this can go.

Like this:
D3100 - Consumer 14mp DX
D5100 - Consumer 16mp DX
D7000 - Consumer 16mp DX
D9000 - Pro (sports/wildlife) 24mp DX
D800 - Pro (landscape/commercial) 36mp FX
D4 - Pro (low light monster) 18mp FX

Or like this:
D3100 - Consumer 14mp DX
D5100 - Consumer 16mp DX
D7000 - Consumer 16mp DX
D400 - Pro (sports/wildlife) 16MP DX
D800 - Pro (landscape/commercial) 24mp FX (a la D3x but with better processing)
D4 - Pro (low light monster) 18mp FX
D4x - Pro (landscape/commercial) 36mp FX

Or some other way... Only the people at Nikon really know, but it's fun to speculate. It really depends on what small FX body comes out I doubt D700 owners are going to let theirs go.

Is there going to be a December challenge?

Welcome to the dark side aka Nikon Squad! No ideas for a challenge yet. We could do the obvious Christmas theme, or someone can suggest something else.

Ethan
12-03-2011, 12:00 AM
Thats awesome!
Amazon was having a pretty good sale on T3i bundles on Cyber Monday. I was actually considering the T3i for a while.. I think the only reason I went Nikon was because my girlfriend has a D3100, so if I buy her a new lens for Christmas or her birthday, i'll be able to use it too. Heh.

Jon, a Christmas theme sounds fine to me!

Who wants to make that thread so we can get this started?

Jon
12-04-2011, 12:50 AM
We need some guidelines. I'd like to do a "wide-open" challenge but I don't like using that terminology unless the lens is capable of f/2.8 at a minimum. And everyone may not have a lens that can do that.

Jasper Ash
12-04-2011, 12:56 AM
^ Similar to our 'prime' challenge, no? Most primes can shoot pretty wide.

speedy000
12-04-2011, 12:59 AM
u dont need to have a huge aperture to get bokeh from lights most kit lens can just zoom as much as it can and shoot f3.5 aslong as the subject and the lights r far apart there will be some bokeh

Jon
12-04-2011, 01:03 AM

In the meantime.. I was messing around with my camera just after I unpacked it and shot this. I thought it was cool. But maybe its not. Whatever.

Saying its "better af" is putting it very mildly. And, the discount was only there for a lens+body combo, the body only price never changed. Sell your D90 and grab the D7k as I did. You'll enjoy cleaner ISOs (seriously better all the way to 1600) and astronomically better af system.

I can't wait to get home and play with my new Nikon 24-120 F4 that's waiting for me on my D7k.

Jon
12-12-2011, 02:58 AM
A local store had the body only on sale for $1099. But if I sell it to my uncle, I'm gonna include the kit lens so getting a D7k as a kit isn't a problem.

Thank you guys. I took those pictures by changing every setting there was. Thats what I need to take at least 3 clases :). I dont want to waste too much time on taking a picture. Another thing I may need to do is change lens. I bought the camera with the regular lens and the 55-250 lens, which they are great but someone at the store told me I would want a smaller lens to take better pictures.

Jasper Ash
12-16-2011, 04:01 PM
They might be referring to a prime lens. They are pretty impressive when you first use them. What do you shoot with.

bebe2630

Jasper Ash
12-16-2011, 05:28 PM
Mainly, the f/stops. Prime lenses can shoot as wide as f1.8, f1.4, and even f1.2. The lens will perform better in low light conditions making it "faster". A lot of the time they have better image quality. I have the T2i and I picked up the $100 50mm 1.8, very happy with it.

Great quality for the price, pretty quick focus, and compact of course. Only things I don't like are that its very plastic, and the small focus ring. But all around, awesome. Not so much a good walk around lens because of the fixed focal length at 35mm. But if you have no problem getting up close to subjects, you're good.

Not so much a good walk around lens because of the fixed focal length at 35mm. But if you have no problem getting up close to subjects, you're good.

Here's another short, simple, video I slapped together for Daily Detergent.

http://vimeo.com/34268426

Awesome, they told me I shouldn't depend much on the zoom when starting out.

Nice video that's why I splurged the extra cash because the D7000 had decent video capabilities compared to the D90 or the D5100.

I think the D5100 does a higher frame rate than the D7000 at 1080p, but of course has less features.

Well I caved in on my first DSLR.

I got the D7000 body w/ Nikkor 35mm 1.8F lens, extra battery, and a 16GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s UHS-I memory to take advantage of the cameras burst rate.

Any opinions for the 35mm good for starting eh?

It's good starting and finishing. $ for $ it's a fantastic purchase. I still have one in my kit. Although, I rarely use it now. I usually use it when I'm in doors, and I'm too close to use my 50 1.4G, like this christmas as a matter of fact. My usual go to lens is the Nikkor 50 1.4G, but now it's going to be the Nikon 24-120 F4 N as it is farking fantastic. If it was 2.8, it'd be too big/heavy for me to use it frequently. Only thing I don't like about it is the lens creep. I have 5 of those 95 mb/S cards. I haven't noticed much of a difference between the Extreme Pro Class 10 cards, the UHS-1 45mb/S cards, and the UHS-1 95mb/S cards.... but there has to be one right?

On another note, I'm currently downloading 700 images from the last week... so I'll throw a few up later.

Oh, and another thing, if you don't have enough HDD space, plan on getting some. I'm taking anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 images a year, and with these RAWs out of the D7k, space is starting to matter. Needless to say, I'm happy I just picked up a 3TB USB3.0 WD desktop HDD for $169 (thanks to someone at Wally World putting the wrong price tag on it).

After the Moon we turned towards the Jovian system. Lets just say Eyepiece Projection looks like its going to be a must as Prime Focus just couldn't get close enough, even with a 2000mm telescope. Both are heavily cropped and used prime focus technique.

So I'm planning on moving to Cali, and I have a bunch of bills I want to get rid of before I head out. I think my camera gear is gonna go to help pay them off.

Included:

Nikon D90
Nikon MbD80 Battery grip with extra battery
Nikon 35mm 1.8 G
Sigma 10-20mm f/4
Nikon Sb-600 Speed Flash
Lowepro Fastpack 250
Sandisk 4gb Card

Everything is worth well over $2000+ jus gaining interest and offers to see what I can get out of everything. Jus want to pay my bills off

That shot. Is awesome. Wow.

Thanks, man. It's a lot of fun, making these videos. I could definitely use more tools during filming, however. Or an extra person to help me out. But I love this truck so much that we're going to do a full video shoot soon. I want to have a 5-8 minute short film put together about it. :D

LOLOL. People keep asking me about my RPF-1s lately. If I have them back. Maybe this is why. Jason's TC is looking great these days. Only makes me more impatient. I'll have them back soon enough. Probably another month or two.

How the hell do u keep the vid so steady?

Jasper Ash
02-06-2012, 07:21 PM
Ummm... Third set? Yeah third.

Fab - I usually either hand hold or shoot using my slider or tripod as a makeshift steady cam. And it really help to shoot at the widest angle possible when hand holding. Shake is much less noticable that way. Anything you use as a third point of contact reduces shake.

the picture is cool because of the story it tells but the composition is awesome and the fish eye cant be beat for stuff like this. what also makes it cool is its completely different from anything the rest of us can shoot. doubt any of us will ever be in a air planes hanger snapping pics

well if other people aren't shooting recently... im a shootin' machine lately. all of my typical air force stuff the board is used to. had an early morning mission the other day, still dark out. shot this of the jet next door all empty, off, and cold before we departed. pretty much love shooting wide open in low light with the 35mm.

^ You know what I miss? My Nikon 35mm 1.8G. It totally owned the Canon 50mm 1.8 I have now. To this day the 35mm 1.8 is the best lens I've ever owned for the cost. I'm hoping to pick up the 50mm 1.4 soon. Maybe that will change my point of view on canon lower end lenses. As of now I dislike them.

Well, all the bugs here are still not available and we have had no good lightning storms roll through in the past year (that I've been home for). I shoot, but mostly with my iPhone as I don't have interest in shooting much else. I'd like to take more images of my Wife but she usually hated being my model.

jasper don't bother with the 50mm 1.4 if you don't like the 1.8, i didn't see a difference other than build quality with the 1.8 and 1.4, there wasnt a crazy differenct in bokeh as well, also i felt my copy was a bit soft, reason why i traded it for a canon 85 1.8. just look for a 35mm for your t2i, i like my 35 f2>50 1.8 on my t1i crop sensor.

you moved to canon might as well take advantage and buy the 50mm f1.2L :lalala:

Canon 50mm 1.4 > Sigma 50mm 1.4, tried a Sigma 30mm 1.4 and it was crap.

The Canon 50mm 1.4 is much better than the 1.8, not just in build quality but overall sharpness, speed, focus. It has seemed to get a little softer, I've had it for about 2 years but it's great. I only see the 50mm 1.8 good for learning and getting used to wide primes, but that's just my thoughts.

50mm 1.2 is next for me.

I've heard that the Sigma is a good lens. It's just finding a good copy or having to send it in to be calibrated is the problem.

I've heard the same thing. If I do buy the sigma, I'm buying new for piece of mind. I think Adorama offers a 3 year warranty because of the "sigma lottery". I'm also considering the Canon 30mm F2 because I miss that focal length. Perfect for crop sensor.

Perfect, another thread I can whore my pictures out on, for reasons I am unsure of lol..:lalala::lalala:

7D+Sigma 30 1.4.

My copy was spot on on my T3, and as far as I can tell with my 7D as well. I played with MA on the 7D, and I think I ended up back at 0.

You guys have me wanting a 7D for this macro adjustment thing. Trying to tell myself that there's no reason to upgrade to a 7D from my T2i yet. Same sensor, arguably higher ISO performance, same video performance and specs, among other similarities. But now I want this MA along with the faster burst rate and 19 AF points. :/

True some copies are better than others and I imagine same with Canon lens' but it just got me weary of those two. I've heard really good things about the Sigma 84mm 1.4, much cheaper than the Canon 1.2. But again you run into the good copy/bad copy debacle.
