I'm running one slim Rockford Fosgate 10 inch DVC 4ohm sub wired in parallel to my Rockford Fosgate mono amp. I have a great, full sound, enough boom, and I'm slathered in eDead, so you can't really hear the sub outside the car with the windows up. The sealed, downward firing box is under the passenger's seat so I still have all my cargo room. Got the box from Elemental Designs but after I blew two of their subs I modified the box to fit the Fosgate. The amp is in the little compartment in the trunk with led lit up fans. I also used a power distribution block to make adding another amp (for components) easier.

That said, it's the sub quality and enclosure optimization that enables his 2x8" config to hit harder than the 1x12". With a different 12 and pair of 8s in other boxes, the opposite (single 12 louder than 2x8") could also easily be realized.
Well, after many custom installs for "freinds", without any reward other than the sense of accomplishment, EVERYONE pays full price.
My rate is $50/hour($65 if anyone gives me a hard time about the price). The subs boxes in the pic took 25-30 hours, and each requires $200 in materials. The weight is roughly about 25 pounds, unloaded, for which shipping is roughly $40.
So let's see how this all works out;
My labor (25-30 hours at $50) = $1250 to 1500
Materials (2 gallons 'glass, mat, MDF, etc.) = $200
Shipping via UPS to residential address = $40
------------------------
Total $1490 to $1740
Oh, I almost forgot, I put a couple hours into AutoCAD also. I would tack that on too.
Seems kinda high, huh? I believe that you can do anything you put your mind to, and I encourage people to do things for themselves rather than pay someone . Learn how to fiberglass, and you could save yourself about $1400. If I can do it, anyone can.
