View Full Version : FS ALL: Door Retention Rods
A-snell 06-23-2009, 11:19 AM I have searched for some door prop rods online and found that they were really expensive... So, I came up with a design of my own for my xB2. I had a chance to test them out on Father's Day 2009 at the Medford Cruise car show. I got a lot of positive feedback so I decided to take this hobby to the next level. The rods hold the doors open at 16" (wide enough for people to still see inside, but closed far enough so they can walk between the cars) the ends are bent in a hook so that the only way to remove them is to pull the door handle as if you were opening your door. And the ends are rubberized to protect the car. For my xB, I made a set of 5, the 4 doors and the rear hatch.
I am selling them in sets of 2 through 5 depending on your needs.
2 rods - $20.00
3 rods - $25.00
4 rods - $30.00
5 rods - $34.00
extra rods are available @ $7 per rod.
please state the quantity in your orders
Prices include shipping.
POWDER COATING OPTION:

*NOTE - with Powder coating it is impossible to COLOR MATCH-or-color key to a specific car color.. but I've seen some that come close.
Here are some examples of the basic colors they have. there are other styles available but they didn't have anything I could take with me, and I found this color chart onlinehttp://www.cardinalpaint.com/a_img/1.gif.
here is the Link: http://www.cardinalpaint.com/products/productcat.php?pcid=2&cctid=8
The company is called ABC Powder Coating here in Medford, Oregon. They don't have a web site, but I was told that they would love to expand their out of area business, call for quotes- Kevin Packard -or- Craig Woitte. Phone #(541)944-8610
Here's a picture of the black Powder coated version, and Yes, the ends are still rubberized.

A-snell 06-26-2009, 05:27 AM so, I'm not sure if instructions are needed, but if you do need them here they are....
You will notice that the rods bend in different ways. There is a reason for this. The bend in the door end of the rod should bend towards the outside. And down through the hook on the car body on the other end. insert the door jam (car body) side first...
http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss157/Meatcutter525/2009%20Medford%20Cruise%20Car%20Show/100_4354.jpg
To secure the rods in the doors simply place the rod in the door latch and GENTLY push it in until the latch catches. To remove the rod, just pull the door handle like you were opening the door. Just make sure to hold the prop rod in your other hand so it doesn’t drop and possibly scratch you paint.

dibbz 06-30-2009, 01:15 PM so would these work on a first gen xb?
A-snell 06-30-2009, 02:26 PM ^ yes.
Mad_Sciontist001 06-30-2009, 05:03 PM Don these will work with most cars and trucks. Nice props and cheapest price I've found anywhere. Andy's selling them for just a couple bucks over his cost for the SL community. Not even making close to min wage on these...lol
A-snell 06-30-2009, 09:16 PM Don- sorry about the short answer... I was on my way to work and popped in to check my posts.. Like Carl said, they will work with almost any car.
A-snell 07-01-2009, 01:52 AM as most of you guys (and gals) know, Kanchi is putting on a car show on July 11th. this is a benefit show for Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County. I truly believe in Habitat for Humanity. SO, I just got done talking with Kanchi and I will be DONATING $1 from EVERY set of my door retention rods that I am selling to this charity until the day of the show 7/11/09.. I know that $1 doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up fast. so hurry and get your orders in now... have them before the show.. takes about 3-4 Business days to receive them.

Thanks for the comment Carl !! And you are right. I am practically giving these away at those prices.. it takes me a lot of time and effort for the price I am charging the SL community. But I think it's worth it.
dibbz 07-02-2009, 12:52 AM thanx andrew!! guess its time to get a paypal acct...
A-snell 07-02-2009, 05:36 AM ^Don- you can send a M.O. if you want. same price.

XBinRochester 07-02-2009, 09:34 AM since you have the RS6 would you like the ends in RED or Black?
Thanks for offering to do them in red for the RS6, but I think I will stay with the black. Seems to be a little more transparent in black.

A-snell 07-03-2009, 11:22 PM ^ you're welcome!
Mouse 07-03-2009, 11:38 PM ^ you're welcome!
Hey there... so these work on tC's as well then? does that need to be stated in the order? or are the door ones all the same length regardless of model of Scion?
thanks!
A-snell 07-03-2009, 11:44 PM yes they work with almost ANY car. they are all the same length. the rods will hold your door open at 16". almost every car/truck and SUV on the market has the same style latching system. but if you have custom doors I.E. lambos or suicide. I cannot guarantee they will work. I have been looking at different style retention rods for a while now and found that 16" is just the right length. and I had a chance to test them out at the Medford Cruise car show on Father's day. people had plenty of room to walk between the cars, and were still able to view the interior.
A-snell 07-05-2009, 02:28 AM bump. HAPPY 4th of July!!!
ack154 07-05-2009, 02:34 AM You may want to PM Tomas about being added to the "Traders" usergroup.

Mad_Sciontist001 07-05-2009, 02:36 AM ^^Good idea I didn't even think about that.
Redbeard46 07-05-2009, 03:31 PM BUMP! for an EXCELLENT product, and an excellent value.

Come and get em everyone.!!
Kanchi 07-05-2009, 11:34 PM Come on guys!! Great product a portion goes stright to charity!!!!
A-snell 07-06-2009, 12:23 AM ^thanks for the comments guys.. I'm not sure how much longer I can have this thread. :(
You may want to PM Tomas about being added to the "Traders" usergroup.
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/groupcp.php?g=74760
I pm'ed Tomas and it's gonna cost me $20 a month... I'm not making NOWHERE near that much from these door rods to be able to do that, so I don't know what's going to happen. I don't want to raise the price of the rods....
ack154 07-06-2009, 12:35 AM Well that's much better than the $200/mo + for regular sponsors. Though I think the "trader" initially started as being free... but subject to change at the whim of IB.... sadly.
A-snell 07-06-2009, 12:55 AM ^ true.. but I'm not making Barely anything on these. if anything at all. just charging for the cost of materials, shipping, and enough to off set the cost of gas for the running around. But, I understand the reasoning behind sponsoring. I am not in any way arguing with that.. I pm'ed Tomas again, I'm just waiting for a reply....
A-snell 07-06-2009, 01:07 AM this is to benefit the SL community. like my first post said.. I have been looking for some door retention rods on line for a while and found that they are not cheap!! found a set of 2 for $40.. I want to help people in these tough times. I am also selling them on E-bay for a lot more. a set of 2 rods on the bay shipped costs the same as a set of 5 shipped would cost on SL. so I am not doing this on here to make money for myself.. PLUS, did you see the post about donating to Kanchi's charity for the show he is putting on??
ack154 07-06-2009, 01:35 AM I have nothing to do with you selling or not... this is up to Tomas. I actually didn't know it changed to $20.
A-snell 07-06-2009, 01:39 AM ^ Allen- I'm not mad. sorry if it seems that way. and yeah. it changes in August or September. to $20 a month.. :(
ack154 07-06-2009, 01:41 AM Well it is definitely frustrating... for us too. We've run into tons of sales like this where people are just trying to help the community but couldn't be sponsors. That's really how the Trader group was created (and like I mentioned, used to be free). That took AGES to get approved, if I recall.
A-snell 07-06-2009, 01:45 AM well it's a good idea. and if I ever get this going like I want to maybe have other designs... then I would have no problem becoming a sponsor. gotta pay the bills somehow. right? :)
anyways. I guess Tomas just added me to the traders group now so no worries.. for now...
Allen- maybe you would like a set of rods for your tC??
ack154 07-06-2009, 02:14 AM I did actually consider a set and the price is good. I just don't think I'd use them. I do hit up a few shows now and then but typically just put my windows down and that works just fine.
ack154 07-06-2009, 02:14 AM Stupid broken post bump.
A-snell 07-06-2009, 02:22 AM I did actually consider a set and the price is good. I just don't think I'd use them. I do hit up a few shows now and then but typically just put my windows down and that works just fine.
windows down? doors closed? :( lol.. Team AscensionPNW just attended a show on Father's Day, that was the first show I used these in. everyone loved them, in fact I sold 2 sets just from the show, that's where I got the idea of posting them on here... it definitely adds to the presentation of the car.
A-snell 07-06-2009, 02:24 AM  I just noticed what it says under my SN. I'm a "trader" makes it sound like I went out and bought a Honda or something.
torqueTc 07-07-2009, 05:41 AM Money sent. Thanks, Ill be using these on the tC, s2000 and my yaris.

A-snell 07-08-2009, 02:53 AM ^ I'm glad you like them... :) I'm getting a lot of orders now.... :) so far the total to donate to Habitat for Humanity ("Show for a Cause" is benefiting) is $10. $1 for every set sold.. hurry and get your order in before 7/11/09 to help the cause...
A-snell 07-08-2009, 03:32 AM to: those of you that have purchased these rods...

A-snell 07-27-2009, 10:51 AM Have an up coming show? looking for something to set you apart from the crowd? tired of people opening and shutting you doors and hatch at shows? then you need these rods..
Unless you pull the door handle they will not release from the door. the ends are also coated in a rubberized dip to protect the vehicle paint. They work on most year/make/model vehicles. only exceptions that I've found include: custom door latch systems, lambo doors (if you have lambos, you probably wouldn't want the rods anyways), suicide doors and gull-wing doors. the average shipping time from here in Oregon to the East coast is 4 days. excluding weekends. so hurry up and get your today before another show comes and goes...
A-snell 07-28-2009, 10:02 AM thought I'd give this a bump since SL has changed formats.. don't want this thread getting lost.. :)
A-snell 07-29-2009, 09:40 AM NICK.. I know you have already ordered your rods.. I thought I'd quote you on this and give a second option for payment..
is there any other way to pay you for these. Ill have to see if my paypal account is still active. please pm me your addy........
Id love to rock these.
thanks

For anyone that does not have a paypal account, I will accept money orders. that just means it will take longer for you to receive the product since I will not ship until the money has been received. But, if you need this option it is available. just send me a PM and I will tell you where to send the M.O. to.
Thank you.

Those look good, Andrew. Good prices, too.
(About "Trader" status: I have finally been given some leeway on that, and I'll hold off on any charges for Trader status for as long as I can keep slipping it by the bean counters. This community needs this sort of thing more than some guy who's not part of the community needs an extra latté a week.)

I have tried a few thigs, but with the weight of the hood it's not looking so good.. Kanchi has a set and he used one for his hood, but he has hood struts..which pulls the hood up instead of needing to be "proped".. I have a couple more ideas for the hood rod, but I'm not sure if it will be a "Vehicle Specific" part or not..

A-snell 09-10-2009, 06:01 AM I added a poll to this thread. I have an in with someone that does powder-coating. I am working on prices and would like to know if anyone is interested in this option? please post you opinion. this will help me in deciding if the powder-coating is an avenue I want to pursue...
DarkPhoenix 09-10-2009, 06:37 AM Nice product! powdercoated ones would be awesome!
Powder coating them would definitely be awesome. Door rods are great or when you want to show off your stuff but dont want ppl sittin in there like a display car at the state fair! And if you could powdercoat em to match or accent, definitely a plus!!
Good product A-Snell! ;)

A-snell 09-13-2009, 05:50 AM thank you all for the comments.. and I can't believe someone would just open up your door and sit in your ride at a show.. WHat NERVE!!! that is a great reason to get a set for your rides........ keeps the riff-raff out. :P

Cory- use that xtra rods for the hood. :) you have hood struts right??
A-snell 09-22-2009, 07:27 AM Well, I had a meeting with the person that will be powder coating the rods for me. we worked out a deal so that the cost will still be very reasonable. :) BUT.. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COLOR MATCH TO YOUR CAR. :( the colors are not paint code specific. sorry. I also asked if he could paint them for me, but that would cost WAY TO MUCH.. there are just to many different colors out there to be doing it. SO, I will be getting a list of colors that are available soon. He (Cory.. So I can stop reffering him to "HE) is in the process of moving into a larger home. so he has to set up him shop all over again. it should be up and going by mid October. Cory is also the Club president of Next evolution car club. they are a club of drifters. they are hosting an event on OCT 3rd, and he has to do all the planning for that. So, please bear with me in the wait for powder coating...
A-snell 09-25-2009, 11:12 AM BUMP!!! ALL PMs replied.... shipments go out tomorrow. :)

YELOSUB 10-04-2009, 03:00 AM Watching and waiting to see how much powder coated versions are gonna go for...Powder coated Hot Lava :)
A-snell 10-04-2009, 03:50 AM Watching and waiting to see how much powder coated versions are gonna go for...Powder coated Hot Lava :)
not sure about the HOT LAVE color. Color matching is impossible with powder coating. I will post the available colors when I get them. I also have a lead on custom painting for the rods, but that is about 1-2 months out.
YELOSUB 10-04-2009, 04:28 AM Thats cool...Doesn't have to be exact but something close ...I'll be waiting...
A-snell 10-04-2009, 04:43 AM Hopefully it won't be much longer. Cory (the powder coating guy) hosted a drifting competition today, so hopefully he'll get his moving done a little faster now. I might have to go help him get it in gear...
xbbox 10-04-2009, 12:55 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f13/xbbox/08%20xB%20PT3/CIMG4176.jpg
Cory- use that xtra rods for the hood. :) you have hood struts right??
Sorry, didn't see this. No, I don't have struts on my hood cuz of the carbon fiber hood. I don't want to break it, lol! Plus I like my skateboard, it opens it up more anyway.
A-snell 10-04-2009, 08:32 PM ^ yeah the skateboard is a nice touch. :p there are struts out there that are HALF strength. mad specifically for CF hoods.
A-snell 10-08-2009, 09:50 PM BUMP!!!!!!!!!!
A-snell 10-09-2009, 09:26 PM I was supposed to meet with Cory about the powder coating today, but I am sick. running a fever of 101.9 .... So, I had to postpone the meeting till next week.
YELOSUB 10-09-2009, 11:15 PM I feel you on the sick part...Been home sick from work since Wed...My highest fever was 102.3 and thats with Ibuprofren...Went to Dr yesterday. got checked for swine flu, waiting on the results...Body aches and coughing none stop...No vomiting though...:) Anyways, get better...

Hope you get well soon.
Tom
A-snell 10-16-2009, 11:45 PM thanks for the get well wishes Tomas. :)
I met with Cory today about the powder coating. He told me that he is looking at close to mid November now. He is having trouble with getting his new shop paved. So, I drove all over the valley today price shopping for powder coating. Cory is going to cut me an AMAZING deal that no one else can even come close to, so it looks like I will have to wait 1 more moth for this. I also looked into getting my own set-up. It doesn't cost that much so it is a possibility but the only issue I might have is the oven to bake the parts in. I know everyone is waiting for powder coating and I am sorry that it is taking so long. please be patient it will happen.
Now, I did find a place that will shoot a bunch of rods for me, but not cost effective unless I shoot 100 + rods, they would all have to be the same color too. What color would you be interested in? Black? white? Red? or Blue? let me know, if enough people want the same color I could go ahead and do this until Cory gets his shop up and going.
A-snell 10-17-2009, 08:02 AM PM's replied. Orders sent. :)

No biggie...Can wait on Cory's shop to open, no hurry...
A-snell 10-18-2009, 07:59 AM I did find a GREAT color for the RS2 tC. one of our chapter members, Rick (RS2BlueDragon) has a RS2. Him and I will be headed down to the shop sometime soon to take a look at the color. I think it is a great match, but HE is the expert on the color. the cost for each set would be $40 SHIPPED and it is a set of 3 rods. Now, if anyone has hood struts/shocks then a 4th rod would be available for an additional $10.
Post up your request on this thread.. http://www.scikotics.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbup.gif I need a MINIMUM of 4 orders to make this happen. I am NOT limiting this to 4 people though. More the merrier. http://www.scikotics.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif But hurry...
yelosub- sorry no RS1 xD match. :( but I will look again at what they have. if I find one I will post about it, but would need at least 4 people to go in on it. the same goes with any other Powder coating for now. Until Cory gets the ISH straightened out with his shop I need a minimum of 4 people ordering the same color.
the prices are (for now) PC= Powder coated
PC 3 rods = $40
PC 4 rods = $50
PC 5 rods = $60
those prices aren't to bad. I went ALL OVER the valley where I live and most places wanted a $60-$75 Set up fee. that doesn't include the coating. so to PC something costs around $100. :(

A-snell 11-02-2009, 06:29 AM BUMP!! I've had a few people ask if I still have these.. the answer? YES!! this is my side business. I'm still around. I ain't going anywhere... I am really busy at work. I work for Safeway, and the holidays are coming up. It will have ZERO effect on my ability to get the rods out, just means I don't post up that much.
Tomas 11-02-2009, 06:36 AM Glad to hear that. :)
What finishes do you have available? (Sorry, I haven't kept up and am unsure which versions you have right now.)

Tom
well, so far just the standard ones. I'm getting a few tC rs2.0 owners in on a blue color that I found that matches dang near perfectly. if I can get 4 people together that want black then that would be great too. I'm still waiting on Cory to finish his shop. He is taking forever... as soon as he does I can get anyone whatever color they want *limited to the PC colors* wich will be posted up as soon as I get them.
