Default New Tires Advice. Falken ZE-912 or Yoko AVID H4S?? Or other??

Well im looking for new tires. Im looking for something that will last me while, and that has decent grip in dry and wet conditions. I have Falken ZE-512's at the moment and I read that the 912 is a better tire. The yokohama AVID H4S caught my eye since it has 500 threadwear and a 60k mile warranty, its a bit more expensive than the Falken.

What do you guys think?? Any other tire you would recommend. My tire size is 225/40/R18.

I can only speak for the AVID H4S, because that's what I've got. I've had the AVID H4S since March and I've driven close to 10k miles on them now (mounted on the 17 stockies) and they have worked very well in both dry and wet weather. Only problem I had was the front driver side tire all of a sudden went flat on me 2 days in a row (happened 2 weeks ago), but America's Tire replaced it with a new tire. However, now I constantly get the TPMS light coming on every so often, yet when I check all the tires the pressure is fine. Hope this helps.

I've been running the ZE-912, stock size, for about 10 months now. I suppose they're ok, given the intended "budget" market, a little better than the stock Yokos my '06 came with. However, they slip fairly easy from a start (easy to chirp, even when I try not to), make a LOT of noise when you exceed their limit, and aren't really what I'd consider a "performance" tire.

If you just want a decent stock replacement, need an all-season that should last a while and don't want to spend much, then I suppose they might be acceptable. I won't be buying another set, and really wish I'd spent a bit more and got something better for handling. Maybe good for you, maybe not, depends on your requirements/priorities...FWIW.

Edit: I never tried the Avid H4S, but with that 500 rating and 60k warranty, they've got to be hard as a rock, so I wouldn't expect them to handle any better than the ZE-912.

You're in SD, so why not try something stickier than both of these, yet still within your budget?

Well the neogens are within my budget but the threadwear is 280 but I know threadwear is not the same with different brands. I went to a Discount tire to ask how much for the installation and they would match the online price from direct. So the ZE-912( 225/40/R18 ) would come to $90+$17 for the replacement warranty. Hows the price pretty good huh??

Should I consider the Nittos Neogens ZR??

Well, I'm using stock size and only paid $75 each, but wish I'd spent a bit more for something that sticks better. They seem to be wearing pretty well, so I guess I'll be stuck with them for a while.

Ya, I'd suggest considering the Neogens over the 912s.

Here is a site that I have purchased tires from before...They have a pretty good deal going on Pirelli PZERO NERO's and the Toyo Proxes 4's...

Here is the site... http://www.treadepot.com

The Pirelli's usually go for way more than that...They got really good reviews...

I have had the Toyo Proxes 4's before on my old Gen1 xB and loved them...

I have BFgoodrich super sport all seasons. I like them They do grip well in the wet. They take a lil while to heat up though so i can break them loose easily. I would suggest something stickeier and prolly a summer tire if your in san diego. the only reason you would need a all season is for snow. The toyo proxes 4 have gotten really good reviews and i hear the neogens are good too. I personally need to look myself as i want a nice sticky tire for when i finish my turbo kit. But i think search tire rack for some decent summer tires and then ahve discount match the price.

nodsetse is CORRECT! The H4S is a very hard riding tire and compared to the Proxes4 or the P Zero Nero, the Yoko H4S is like driving an old buick! Steering is all over the place, meaning you steer more than normal to get movement in the direction of the car. I guess if you got used to it, it would be "ok" but I thought it was a joke of a tire. The bumps were like slamming into a curb. Returned it and went with the Proxes4's. Much happier now.

Maybe the Proxes4s, Neogens?

The price you have for the Neogens is a good price, they're a cousin of the Proxes4's. Nitto is a division of Toyo.

of the 2...Yoko's hands down. The Falkens Ziex's, aside from stock, were the worst tires i have ever owned. Horrible traction, and siginifcantly more road noise than even the Yokohama Parada Spec-2's i had for awhile...if you get rain you will hate them, if you try to launch it you will hate them, if you try to corner with them...guess what...YIU WILL HATE THEM! Only thing those are good for is cheap tires if you are trading it in or for streching them.

Spend the money and get a decent tire. HV1 had a good reccomedation with a set of BFG's I'd look @ those.

They might last longer than you think, it depends on how you drive.

It's very difficult to estimate and compare how long they'll last using that wear number. As an example, compare the Falken 512 vs 912. Both are listed as 360AA, yet they rate the 512 for 30k miles and the 912 for 40k.

So you've got ZE-512 now, how do you like them? I ask because they have them in your size for $95, and everything I've read seems to indicate they have better performance than the 912 at $102. If you liked them, the 512 would likely be a better choice than the 912.

Turns out the NeoGens are also $95 in your size, considering the reviews and comparing them to other tires in your price range, definitely worth considering. Since you're concerned about the 280 rating, you might want to consider the NT-555 too, as it's just $99 and has a 300 rating and is known to perform well.

Some of the other tires people have recommended are in a higher price range compared to those I mentioned above, like the BFG g-Force Sports at $141 (340AA rating), which would be great if you had more to spend.

If you have to stay within that budget and buy from the site you linked to, I'd suggest either the NeoGens or NT-555...unless you really liked the ZE-512 enough to use them again. Good luck deciding!
