Default rx8 throttle body swap discussion

After seeing the newest built motor from Max Hughes and his short write up in his build thread about how the swap is done I am very intrigued about performing the swap on my car. I am considering doing the swap and taking advantage of a place in town that has a few pulls on a dyno for 40 bucks. I've been wanting to get my car dyno'd anyways to see what it was making and that way I could also get some real numbers for everyone to see if it's worth it. I would like everybody's input on things to do with the swap, for example:

how much the parts needed for the swap would cost?
is the swap cost effective in money spent/horsepower gained?
would it be best to get a larger intake to increase flow to the larger throttle body?

I looked around on rx8 forums and found a throttle body going for 100 bucks, the horsepower gained might be like 5whp and if you get a larger intake maybe 6 or 7whp?

LET'S DISCUSS

While more air would in theory be introduced into the intake system with a bigger throttle body, you need to remember that it would be limited by a smaller intake for the tC. Also without tuning, and a big power adder, you gains would be minimal. The most you would feel is a butt dyno increase.

Also in before the bandwagon.

i really think that once you get the rx8 TB coupled with an intake manifold(weaponR) and some tuning you can get more than 2hp, but like we say here in puerto rico "no tunig, no life" if you get it and dont tune or dont get some kind of intake manifold the youll be in the 2hp wagon.......

I wouldn't put a weapon r intake manifold and expect it to gain a lot with this. But with the price we're talking now for 6-10 hp, its simply not worth it.

If it was a bolt on, sure. Seeing its not, I'll pass.

Sounds like alot of work for 3-6hp.

time will tell what the gains are, im still doing it. modding for n/a is very expensive but worth every penny.

just my 2cents, unless you have cams, a nicely ported head with larger valves, or other major v.e. improvements, dont expect to see any gain from changing to a larger tb as our 55 mm one flows around twice as many cfm at 3lbs as the stock head does. i.e. its not the restriction, or at least is much less of one. now for the hardcore n/a guys and boosters, this is a very nice find.

Peace,
TYLER

It sucks that our cars our DBW, thats like another 4000+ in custom parts throttles and tuning..

Why are there no good intake manifolds on the market with nice long runners, and a TB to match...
But I dont think this is a bandwagon for 2hp, in a high hp NA application we have to get every single thing working in unison without hickups in the process, that being breathing or exhaling, thus why we also need a equal length header tuned by rpm with a nice merge collector..With the new tc on the market its just a matter of time before our car is forgotten

done rambling now..

jimmy, ive seen your build and i approve, that wasnt so much pointed at you, more intended to be a general comment to the random perusers of this thread. In youre case its completely justified. And I agree, why do we have no good long runner manifolds, us N/A guys get no love.

another item of thought, maybe use our stock servo mounted on an old trd 4age itb setup via an adapter plate and transfer rod or make a custom setup using yamaha r1 tbs? possibly have a nice plenum adapted to the setup and then tune using a map sensor instead of our silly maf. obviously standalone is required.
