View Full Version : drum breaks jct 03-09-2005, 10:45 PM do they make proforamce drum break kits??? XBman 03-09-2005, 11:02 PM breaks? lol why would you need them? just get better front pads and youre set jct 03-10-2005, 12:11 AM i was just wondering it doesn't hurt to ask kind of lookin (not really, just askin a lame :loser: question lol) for some thing that'll keep up with the fronts when i do 'em and i do not want to do a rear disk conversion  Cockpit_XB 03-11-2005, 03:41 PM i heard brembo makes a performance brake shoe or drum, cant really remember, take a look @ there website & just product search. Rion 03-15-2005, 02:43 AM Performance brake drums is an oxymoron. Kind of like Republican think tank. Ashe_WCM 03-15-2005, 03:03 AM or Democratic military policy Rion 03-15-2005, 07:09 AM or Democratic military policy A Democratic military policy would probably involve...oh I don't know... maybe sending special forces after Osama bin Laden instead of pulling them out of Afghanistan and leaving some overpaid goat herders to do the most important job in the world. But then I'm not a Democrat, so I wouldn't know... You can't be all bad though, Ashe. At least you don't help fund terrorism by driving a 6 mpg SUV like most "conservative" hypocrites. djct_watt 03-15-2005, 09:03 AM Actually, out here in CA (the land of the liberal), SUV's are the popular choice. Look at liberal Hollywood. . . nothing but Hummer, Escalades, Expeditions, Yukon's, etc. They sell better here than out in the mid-west. Strictly talkin SUV's, of course. djct_watt 03-15-2005, 09:06 AM I think a Democratic Policy would invovle throwing away money at unproductive social programs aimed at peace, while closing borders to trade (free trade is economically proven to have high net benefits, despite job losses, which are FEW, relative to national savings). I hate democrats and republicans. . . it's about finding the middle line. Any extremist clearly has no idea how politics work, either way. . . but all this junk has nothing to do with drum BRAKES. djct_watt 03-15-2005, 09:15 AM I believe they make performance drum shoes/pads. . . you know, many a performance car (back in the day) had drum brakes all around, and they stopped relatively well for their weight. . . old school Porsche's, Corvettes, etc etc. Others have argued with me before, but I've talked to a few specialists out there and confirmed, doing a rear disc conversion without a serious front brake upgrade is a bad idea, so you are on the right track. If you want brake performance tho, save your money and invest it all in the best front brakes possible; rotors, pistons, pads, etc. . . then upgrade your wheels and tires (size matters. . . bigger wheels = slower acceleration and slower braking because of more rotational mass). Those items will give soon before your rear drums do. Once all those items are the best they possibly can be, then consider a rear disc conversion. . . but even then, it should only be a consideration, IMO. . . at least for these cars. Shoe/pad upgrades? Probably wouldn't hurt, but I'd save the money. mynameisphunk 03-20-2005, 06:45 AM I believe they make performance drum shoes/pads. . . you know, many a performance car (back in the day) had drum brakes all around, and they stopped relatively well for their weight. . . old school Porsche's, Corvettes, etc etc. Others have argued with me before, but I've talked to a few specialists out there and confirmed, doing a rear disc conversion without a serious front brake upgrade is a bad idea, so you are on the right track. Shoe/pad upgrades? Probably wouldn't hurt, but I'd save the money. agreed. front brakes are obviously the most important...i wouldn't worry too much about the rear drums, you actually might be surprised how much drums SAVE weight at each corner compared to comparable size disc brakes (~6 pounds on older volkswagens that i'm used to). a lot of SCCA vw's run rear drums specifically for that reason- the rear discs really don't add much more braking prowess, and really aren't worth the added weight. i bought a 1986 GTI w/ stainless steel braided lines and crossdrilled rotors front and rear, and with the stock non-adjustable proportioning valve, the car would constantly lock up the rear brakes on heavy braking. fun, but certainly not ideal. honestly, a set of good pads for your front brakes will probably make a very noticeable difference...i wouldn't worry too much about the rear drums, let 'em be and you'll be fine. djct_watt 03-20-2005, 08:34 AM and it's the truth! Shoof 03-23-2005, 12:20 PM Disc brakes in back would have been nice.. Joehnn 03-23-2005, 12:50 PM Performance brake drums is an oxymoron. Kind of like Republican think tank. Or a democratic brain. If your young and conservative you have no heart. If your old and liberal you have no brain. -----Winston Churchill. jct 03-23-2005, 11:09 PM i wanna do a front drum conversion B2FiNiTY 03-24-2005, 06:39 AM Stop being stupid. It is very annoying and contributes nothing to the community here. bBoxed_In 03-25-2005, 04:01 AM you'd probably be better off converting it to discs. looks better, performs better... period. drums are just there to save from the manufacturer. think of it as a long term investment, not just the intial money you'll be putting down. too bad there aren't many manufacturers that make conversion kits. hell, someone might as well propose to AEM or some of the other BRAND name companies to produce a kit. i think there'd be a good interest in it.
