Radar detector cord caused damage...

Fail, really? In terms of performance having it mounted in the conventional position has been great. No tickets ever. Plenty of warning. And isn't there that spotted area above the rear view mirror? Seems to me that would impede performance of the detector. But, if not then great. Might try that.

You should definitely hardwire your detector. Either that or at least add another cigarette lighter dedicated just for that.
As for performance, generally lower is better for laser since cops first aim for the front plate. Higher is better for radar.
