xB mileage
I have a 2005 xB with the automatic transmission. I live in Miami, Fl and we almost have to have the air conditioning on at all times. I use my xB mainly for city driving. I have been averaging mid-20's in miles per gallon with the air conditioning on. This is no where near what Scion advertises. Has anyone else been getting lower than advertised mileage??? Someone told me that the xB's tiny 11.9 gas tank severly limits range...any ideas???
I had the same concerns about mileage when I got my XB last August.
I get about 30 mpg in mixed driving, but the best I ever got was 32 mpg. I voiced this to them when they called me for my survey after my purchase, but I had only 1000mi at the time. Sometimes mileage improves after the engine is broken in, but I have 5000mi now and it's still the same.
31-35 mpg, I don't think so! My Scion salesman also told mt the AEM cai would add 1-2 mpg. Another lie, although I think he really believed it.
Another thing is I thought it maybe my driving habits. So I took it easy on the gas and it still didn't improve. So then I was pounding the accelerator all over town and my mileage still stayed the same! So now I drive as hard as I want and I don't seem to pay for it at the pump. You just gotta love the VVT-I! It likes to be revved high and fast.
And remember, my silver box cannot be stopped! -JDB

ya, im slighty dissapointed with my gas mileage. i really felt it lacked with the distance i could get outta the thing. i guess i cant complain at 2.25 a gallon/20 bux to fill her up. but i really wish i could drive farther~~im gonna put the odo on the next time i fill up and see how many miles i get out of a tank..
I have around 2500 miles on mine so far. Maybe it is the combo. of city driving, the air on and the automatic that is affecting it. I am going to do a couple of odometer readings to continue monitoring the gas.
The posted mileages on Scions, or any car, are based on a speed limit of 55 MPH. The faster you go the lower the MPG. I have tested this theory myself
2004 XB and Automatic, with my driving habits;
70MPH and under I got 32MPG
80MPH and under I got 29MPG
These are averages of course.
90% of my driving is highway and I have not had to use the AC yet. If you keep it to 65 and below you will probably be happy with your MPG.

i heard on the radio that when the government tests cars for mpg, they drive 60 miles an hour without stoping once, no intense turning, aircontioning off, basicaly they dont really drive, they said that on average you get 15 gallons less then avertised on all cars
I am running 195/60/15 snow tires which are slightly larger and heavier which gives a: Speedometer Difference: 1.978% too slow and a Diameter Difference: 1.95%. I have been getting about 24 to 27 depending on how deep the snow has been this winter. That includes idling to warm up the box using the remote start. It will be interesting to see how the millage improves with the OEM tires back on it.
Re mileage, keep in mind that the odometer reads around 4.5% too low, with the stock 15" tires. i.e. when you travel 100 miles, the trip odometer will go up by only 95.5 miles. I had read that here a while ago, and verified it this weekend while driving on the NJ Turnpike.
So say you traveled 250 odo miles on 10 gallons, and calculated 25 MPG. 250 odo miles translates to (250 * 100/95.5) = 261.8 miles, or a real MPG of 26.2 MPG. Hopefully I got the math right.

Does anyone have proof of this 4.5% too low speedo reading?!
rallyxb, I'm talking about the ODOmeter, not SPEEDometer. I've heard the speedometer reads high, like most cars. It's easy enough to test your own odometer, when you take a trip of at least, say, 20 miles, on a road with legible mile markers. When you pass a mile marker with a nice round number, reset one of your trip odometers. When you get to the mile marker 10 miles further on, see what the trip odometer reads. In my case it would read 9.5 or 9.6.
If your tires are bigger, then your odometer will read even lower than mine.

(sigh) I must have the only xB that gets (on average), 36 MPG. Sometimes as high as 39.
It's all about the driving habits, and the quality of the gas you get, and how much weight you have to push around.
I run on stock sized after market wheels, I don't have a huge sub in the back, and I have a five speed. I can drive around town 35 MPH to 45 MPH in fourth gear, which greatly increases the mileage.
I don't get as high a MPG on the highway. It's a BRICK on wheels after all, on the highway.
For WIW, my xA gets better mileage then the xB on the highway, but worse mileage in the city. I think that is because it's an auto.
Oh, and I live in SOUTH FLORIDA, with the A/C on almost all the time.

I have an automatic 2005 xB and I avg about 27-29mpg. I think this is due to my wheels. I have 17s on it, and I push my car to get on the road.
I rarely have my automatic change gears at 2.5rpms. I always over-do it around 3RPMs or 3.5RPMs. I know... OUCH....

There are several reasons why you and most of us aren't getting the posted MPG. First, the test that determines this number is out-dated and 99% of the driving public don't drive under the circumstances they use.
Many of us are heavy footed and prefer to drive 60-70mph (highway) and accelerate too fast from dead stops when street driving. You also admited that you have your a/c on all the time. Well the energy to run the a/c has to come from somewhere and that's your gas too.
So crack the window (unless it's just too hot, and I know it can be in FL) and slow it down and see how that helps.
When gas cracked the $2.00 mark here in Chicago
, I changed my driving style and I see myself getting 3-5 MPG (27-30 MPG) more than I had been.

I'm with TJandBOXCARWILLIE, I get no less than 32 MPG unless I'm doing lots of freeway driving (75-85MPH). I've got 13,000 on my box and mileage has been consistent the entire time. My 20 mile stop and go commute everyday usually does average 35-38 MPG when I'm not doing heavy acceleration. I do think that the 5spd helps bunches too.
