Default ** Camry trans vs. tC trans ratio talk **

I have an '04 camry with the 5-speed, and was wondering how much longer the gears are than the tC. My buddy is getting ready to swap a tC trans in his '03 camry, and we were curious.

For reference, I got this pic on a closed road, in 4th gear... This is on 225-40-18 tires, slightly stretched, so the speedo might be reading a bit high.

yep, that's 170k+, and I didn't have a speedo for a year, so its really around 180k stock clutch too, and I drove it with 9 miles on the clock, so yea, I can drive. lmao

All I know is these ratios would be a ton of fun with boost and a taller tire. I imagine around 135-140mph in 4th gear, revving out to 7200 or so with a 245 tire. yum. I'd LOVE to bury that tach tho. that would be pure secks IMO.

thoughts?

I've owned a 2002 Toyota Camry MT and loved the gear ratios in that tranny. The Camry felt more like a V6 imo even though it only had the 2.4L.
I dont remember what 1st took you to, but 2nd went to 60 mph, 3rd to 90 mphs, 4th to 120-125 mph, 5th doesnt do anything (cruising gear). It was nice because you could cruise easily at 80 mph in 5th at exactly 3000 rpm. Instead of the TC, which is buzzing at 3700 rpm just to cruise 80 mph.

So the tC is at 3700 at 80? That's a big difference!

you're right.. wheel/tire diameter mainly..

I'm on 18x9.5's with 225-40 tires, so they are stretched, and I know the speedo reads a few mph fast, or so says the police radar things.. I have a set of 245-40's sitting at my house, and I'll post what the difference is once I get them mounted..

What about axle strength? Are they known to break in the tC with boost? I just want to make sure I cover my grounds before diving into this..

TC axels are pretty hefty as is. if you were in a tc at 90mph you would be closer to 4.4K i'd stick with the camry tranny but thats just my opinion.

word, thanks man..

On a side note, found out my car weighs a few clicks over 3100lbs, what is that compared to the tC?

ohh that's quite a bit lighter... I bet I could get mine to around 3k without me in it, without too much trouble, but of course thats without a turbo kit..

thanks again..

What clutch would you all recommend? I was leaning toward an ACT street...

thats what i run. i'm on my 2nd one and the only reason i had to put a 2nd one is, is because the seal on my input shaft died and slung gear oil all over the old disc. so it was slipping

after riding shot gun in thendawg's car against a supercharged 640whp mustang and pulling it.... hard I think he is more in the mid 5 range. He has 7500 redline and the e351, its a magical combination

Yeah, mine USED to be around 450 whp ;) That was on 19ish psi. Its now on 26-27 psi. I have the E351 in my tc and its MUCH better than the stock tc trans for boost. With 7200 rpm limiter (I dropped it after putting in the E351) I can go to about 140-142 in 4th, 5th should theoretically get to 200. The fastest Ive had it was 170 and it was a bit frightening haha.
