View Full Version : Brake Pads
MightyP 08-22-2011, 02:59 AM I started this thread to find better brake pads for my car. In my searches, I discovered there isn't a lot out there. Below is what I have found for aftermarket brake pads. Perhaps we can get this stickied.

NOTE: The rear pads listed above from EBC were designed for the tC1. Below are some things to keep in mind when deciding what pads to get:
- EBC assures me the rear pads they make for the tC1 will fit the tC2.
- While the rear rotors are different (tC2 rotors are larger), the pads are very similar in size. Actually the tC1 had larger pads than the tC2. (20cm2 vs 19.6cm2)
- Other brake pad manufacturers (including Hawk Performance) have said having pads a slightly different size isn't a problem, especially when you're upgrading the materials. (Thus why Hawk suggested the xB pads for the front of the tC2)
***Thanks to Backinblacktc2 for pointing me toward EBC Brakes, to EBC brakes for providing the details and to Jennifer@Scion for getting me the technical info!***
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
I'd like to upgrade the brake pads on my car and haven't been able to find any performance pads. Hawk emailed me back and said they make the rears in Performance Street, but the closest they have is the pad for the xB, which is .29" shorter in length and .05" shorter in height.
I'm not brake savvy and don't know if that would even work. Anyone know of another company making upgraded pads?
Thanks
Backinblacktc2 08-22-2011, 03:21 AM Check these out the only ones I know of mabye the EBC Yellowstuff brake pads may help you

EBC Yellowstuff:
Ultra High Friction Pads for Race, Trackday and Street Use.
MightyP 08-22-2011, 03:39 AM Thanks. I saw them, but have never heard of them before and only saw replacement front pads. I emailed them and asked about rear pads, but have you had any experience with their brake pads?
Thanks again
Backinblacktc2 08-22-2011, 03:50 AM Personally no I have had no experience with these pads but alot of my friends have and they swear by them.
Scion202 08-22-2011, 04:44 AM i'll be getting red ones shortly
btw you should start with stainless steel lines

goose_119 08-22-2011, 04:50 AM used to own a dodge ram, and on one of my forums the guys were freaks about EBC pads. swore by them
i just ordered the red ones. should be on next week. and ive been told that ebc is really good.
Dam262a 08-22-2011, 12:10 PM a little heads up aftermarket pads have probs like brake dust or squeaking, I do know that ebc pads do either dust or squeaking i forget.
MightyP 08-22-2011, 02:09 PM @Scion202: Brake lines will go in at the same time. I just already know where to get those. :)
@jtk2: Did you get front and rear pads? I've only found the fronts? In either case, I'd like to know what you think.
@Dam262a: At least for the yellow, EBC actually says there will be more dust. But that's to be expected for street legal race brakes.
Roller_Toaster 08-22-2011, 05:09 PM I ran hawk hps on my old car. GREAT pads, I actually put them and some slotted rotors on before heading to the tail of the dragon, and noticed a big difference from oem(bite and resistance to fade). About the same as oem on dust, which was fairly significant.
j3st3r 08-22-2011, 06:55 PM Several of our crew road race/autoX quite a bit and have tried the EBC pads.....and not one of us has been a fan of them. We have actually had several of the pads disintegrate on the track. I would stick with Hawk if I were you
MightyP 08-22-2011, 08:18 PM ^ Stick with Hawk pads that don't fit exactly? I would go Hawk in a heartbeat if they had an exact application. My dilema becomes, go with Hawk brand pads designed for the xB or EBC pads (company I don't have experience with that has gotten mixed reviews on here) that have an exact application?

I think it would be best to try and contact Hawk directly and see if they can answer your fitment question, or see if they have something in the works. Again though only telling you what are experience(s) have been on the other stuff, you might have better luck
MightyP 08-22-2011, 08:44 PM I actually did contact Hawk directly. That's how I found out the xB pads are close to the tC2 pads. Very quick response and thorough answer (gave me dimension differences, part numbers, etc), but they said they have no plans to develop a front pad for the tC2 (they already have a rear pad, part number # HB629F.565). And they were the ones who recommended trying the xB pad. I would assume they wouldn't recommend a different pad if it's unsafe (liability issues after all), but still seems questionable to me.

I just got front pads since that was all I can find. And not really worried about the rears since they only do like what 20% of the stopping? Ima try out the ebc and see if there any good. If not I'll probably switch to hawk when they get an exact application and do front and rears on drilled/slotted rotors.
j3st3r 08-23-2011, 12:43 AM I guess the question is what are you wanting to accomplish? Pedal Feel? For Racing? etc
If you are not going to be racing(on track, or AutoX) then buying racing type pads, are not really going to do much for you, except cause noise, accelerated rotor wear, and dust. If it is just better braking feel, then the previous suggestions should be good(upgrade to braided lines, and better fluid), and utilize the stock pads.
I just think I should get more of a racing pad because it my 07 I put 30k miles on the stocks with no problems but my tc2 I have 15k and there starting to squeal.
MightyP 08-23-2011, 02:03 AM The squeaking can be because of brake dust rather than wear. The pads for the tC2 are actually pretty aggressive. I'm not looking to replace my OEM pads because they don't work on the track. They're actually quite good and don't fade even after a number of runs in triple digit heat. My concern is how hot they get, which then transfer that heat to the tires, and to be prepared when I do need to replace the brake pads.
I'm over 20K miles with track time and my brakes are fine. Tires are looking a bit worn, but that's another story.
WellesleyScion 08-23-2011, 04:10 PM Paul, I think you and I will be the first ones to the 100k mile club LOL. I have just over 20K on mine too :)
Scratch 08-23-2011, 04:46 PM How long have you both owned your tCs? the rate I'm going I may be up there sooner than I want to...
MightyP 08-23-2011, 05:11 PM Got my tC in Nov. Most of my miles came from doing trips to TX twice a month for 4 months.
Scion202 08-23-2011, 06:57 PM i put 1000 miles every 2 weeks
WellesleyScion 08-23-2011, 08:31 PM I got it back in October 2010.
Yeah, Kenny tran told ne that the first thing he wants to attack are the breaks for auto x. Then the suspension, I'm going to see if he cam try to talk with hawk or some other company into getting some pads for the tC2.
NickF127 08-25-2011, 12:35 AM I;m not too far behind you guys. I got mine in April and I have 7k on it.
But as to pads, adam's rotors seems to suggest STOPTECH has pads out.

topher86 08-25-2011, 01:20 AM Wow just got mine begining of march and only have 4500 on it
NickF127 08-25-2011, 01:33 AM I drive alot... lol
KidJustin 08-25-2011, 06:41 AM i've had mine since October 2010....I just got my 10k service earlier this week (even though i'm only at 995x)
Scion202 08-25-2011, 07:22 AM got mine end of April and now 10500 miles on it
johndeo11 08-25-2011, 07:34 AM got mine October 2010. 9.8k/9.9k miles i think, and already did my 10k maintenance couple weeks ago.
donsun 08-30-2011, 01:14 PM slightly off topic question: when resetting the caliper, is the one on our car just a push-in or is it a turn-in? I assumed it was a push-in and pushed it in a little bit with a crappy c-clamp and got it on, but when i first drove around it felt like it was riding that brake since i hadn't pushed it in all the way, but after a bit of driving it returned to normal. is that okay or should I take it apart again and do it right?
Blackedout011TC 08-31-2011, 01:46 AM Well if it was not a push in type, you never would have got them on there. The screw in type of calipers do not budge with a C-clamp. My Mazda Protege' taught me that. I broke one of the big Craftsman C-clamps trying to install new pads. Finally found the screw behind a dust cap, easy as can be after that. If it feels ok, then it probably is ok.
eddystc 09-02-2011, 03:46 AM I think im ahead of all you guys. Got mine in dic. And it already has 35,000. But this is something im not proud of. Lol.
MightyP 09-07-2011, 03:45 PM ^ I think we have a winner!
Anyway, I was reminded I hadn't updated this in a while. EBC Brakes emailed me back and said they do make both front and rear pads for the tC2. I couldn't find them listed online, so you may have to call as they didn't give me a part number.
MightyP 09-15-2011, 07:05 PM EBC emailed me back today with info on the rear brake pads! Below is a list of the part numbers for the rear brake pads. I didn't include the part numbers for the fronts because those are pretty easy to find. I'll also update my initial post.
Ultimax-
Green Stuff-
Red Stuff-
Yellow Stuff-
They also offered to send me a set of Yellow Stuff pads to test at my next AutoX event! Woohoo! Hope they follow through, because these could make serious improvements to my lap times.
EDIT: Hold on before ordering. I want to confirm the part numbers again...
Scion202 09-15-2011, 07:31 PM thanks!
MightyP 09-15-2011, 07:40 PM Hey, don't buy rear pads just yet. Unless the rear pads are the same for the tC2s as they are for the tC1s, the numbers he gave me are wrong.
I apologize for putting bad info out there, but I didn't check it first. :(
MightyP 09-16-2011, 06:00 PM Okay, I have some answers! Sorta.
EBC assures me the rear pads from the tC1 will fit the tC2. Jennifer@Scion was kind enough to provide me the details on the rear brakes from both tC models and the pads are very similar. In fact, the tC1 pads are slightly larger than the tC2 pads (by 0.4 cu. cm), though the tC2 rotors are bigger.
I'm definitely no expert in brakes, but given that both EBC and Hawk have told me using pads a slightly different size is okay, it sounds like the rear pads from the tC1 will work on our cars. But as always, try it at your own risk!
I updated the original post with a chart that has part numbers and approximate cost of the brake pads. If anyone has info on other aftermarket pads, let me know and I'll add it to the list!
Thanks!
Paul
P.S. Sticky???
Blackedout011TC 09-18-2011, 07:22 AM Sticky X2! EBC please make us cross drilled rotors for all 4 corners too.
