Is anyone here running anything heavier than the factory recommended 5w-20 or 0w-20 in their 2nd gen? When looking the 2AZ-FE up on Castrol's or Valvoline's UK or Australian sites, they recommend a 5w-30 or 10w-30. Mobil 1 recommends their 0w-40 in europe. Just curious as I'm looking to try and get rid of some of my valvetrain noise (lots of valve tap at idle).

Thanks Minus, I've been a member their since 08 I think. Lurked around there long before that. I was just curious what other owners are actually running. I prefer 5w-20 myself as well, but I've been trying other options to see if I can quiet up my valvetrain noise. I've been running some Fram Synthetic 5w20 (Basically the same as Motorcraft Synthetic) I picked up on clearance. It seemed much quieter at first than the other oils I've tryed, but about 2,000miles into my OCI, it got noisy again. I've got some QSUD waiting to go in it as I've heard this stuff runs pretty quiet, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 0W20 in Texas. We get weird weather.. one day 90 degrees and another 40 degree day the next. But I'm running a thin oil to rip better mpgs. So far Im getting 27 combined so I cant complain.

5w20 royal purple from the first oil change, my xb runs hard too. Bought to change my oil next weekend, and in the process i am going to change my manual fluid out for royal purple too.

5 Quarts of Castrol Semi-Synth 5w-20 is $16.99 at Walmart. With a Geniune Toyota filter, it's less than $22. And with the five quart jugs, after every four oil changes, you get one free. Every Scion site, Every Toyota link says 0w20 or 5w20 for the latest XB engine. The question could be "why would you" other than "could you". The speed at witch the oil gets up to the rest of the engine at cold startup matters. I will also note that my Tacoma truck also listed 0w20 and 5w20, but also that in warmer climates, a 5w30 could be used in it's place. This is stated in the owners manual. I have not yet seen any such disclaimer for the very similar XB engine. It could very well exist. It is almost exactly the same engine.

There has been much talk about this, and Ive read the oil jets theory, and the mileage theory.

At the end of the day you can run 5w-30 and not worry about anything, you can also run 0w-20 and 5w-20 without concern.

Sure, Toyota may have added extra oil jets to accommodate 20w, but all this is done to improve mileage slightly for the business side of things. There isnt something special about a 5w-20 motor that it cant run 5w-30.
