Default OPENED STOCK AIR BOX AND SOUNDS LIKE I GOT AN INTAKE!

Yesterday my friend told me that if i crack the stock air box ( meaning just undo clips and let top of air box rest on clips) and drive around it will sound like i have a CAI intake. He said it would not hurt the engine.

So i tried it and it does sound similar to a CAI or maybe short ram intake. You can really hear it when you are a little above 3000 rpm's and you stomp on the gas in 3rd and 4th gear. I also think it may make the exhaust sound a LITTLE deeper too . (TRD exhaust)

As anyone tried this? or heard of doing this? Will it harm engine?

uhh i did this in my beater! I know what u mean though Im not so sure about the tC but it jsut screamed at high RPM's. Then everyone would point and laught at me. But I liked it haha. The stock air ssytem for the tC makes that whistling noise which I like too.

i don't think i would want t hear the roar of the engine when i'm driving on the highway for a while, considering the tC has short gears and your always going to be above 3000 rpm

You're probably OK unless the air filter "breaks it's seal" and allows crap to get into your intake.

Also, be aware that water can get in there easier, too!

If I am not mistaken, the filter lies on the bottom portion of the air box (havn't seen it on a tC exactly). If this is the case, unclipping the air box will most likely leave a gap between the filter and the intake tube which will cause crap to get sucked into your engine.

I don't know, this sounds as good as cutting your springs to lower your car,.

W/O cracking the airbox, you can hear the stock air intake sucking in air when you press on the accelerator. Why make it "sound" like you have a CAI when you can just fork over 200 bucks and HAVE a CAI anyway?

There ant nothing for the engine to suck in there except air. it is too high to catch anything from the ground.

the mesh is actually there to help air flow... it's probably on your maf. that won't stop crap to get sucked in... the filter is there to filter small elements too... so if you crack it, the small crap will still get into your intake causing build up

If I am not mistaken, the plastic mesh he is talking about is actually a charcoal filter.. New cars are using them now, for what? I dunno honestly.. I just heard talk about it.. .I am sure someone knows what I am talking about..

that charcoal filter is supposedly there to absorb the unburnt fuel and oil.... at least I think that's what I remember the owners book said?

Hmmm I don't think bypassing your stock air filter would be a smart idea, even if it does sound cool. Put it back together so you don't suck crap into your motor. If you want your new car to sound cool just spend the money and buy a intake. Not worth messing around with your motor just for a cool sound. Just my two cents.

Damn you didn't learn anything about cars in Driver's Ed last quarter did you!?

Feel free to do this guys, see if you can ruin your engine before the warranty expires. It's PERFECT!

1) the intake is in the engine compartment, but that doesn't mean particles don't come flying up with relative ease.
2) When your going at a high rate of speed air flows throughout the car more and more
3) You obviously have no idea the purpose of the filter. MY GOD why even have a filter? For all those stupid idiots who don't know nothing about cars like YOU? Man, if you knew as much about cars as you did grammer... oh wait, you do.
4) There are particles flying in the air, whether it be simply dirt, or something else, that you may not even be able to see. Filters block these from entering the engine and damaging it. There have been studies that show CAI with aftermarket filters or the larger-pore (K&N) filters do lower the life of engines, although not drastically and it depends on where you are. Nonetheless, this will damage your engine. I imagine it will only take a large rainstorm or a few thousand miles for you to realize the error in your logic

oh yeah, P.S. Thanks for making yet another post that I'm sure will be circulating around car enthusiast forums as representation of the idiocy found on scionlife.

havent you ever seen an old filter??? Imagine if all that ____ made it into your engine! Trade in your Scion for a geo metro ASAP. You dont deserve a tC.
