I changed my oil a few days ago, and I didn't change the oil filter. Assuming the car has been sitting (so all oil goes to the pan) can I remove the oil filter without draining the oil pan first? or will all the oil come out that end instead? I want to change the filter, without going thru the whole process of changing the oil again.

The question is specific to the tC... thanks

On some cars you can remove the oil filter instead of draining the oil. You will just lose the oil that is in the filter itself. I'm not sure about the Tc because I haven't changed my oil yet. Sorry bro

it might be easier to just drain the oil again. its not that expensive and certainly not difficult. might save you all the cleanup just in case it does spill all the oil...

 

yeah, you're going to cause a mess

 

you will lose oil if you change the filter alone. yes the filter sits al il higher than the lil screw or hole where the oil drains but a lot of oil will still come out.


so to answer you question and leaving a side note.


change your filter the next time you chnage you oil, old filters will only make your oil blacker faster and you can change the filter but u wil lose a lot of oil and make amess

 

its good to change the oil twice in a row on a new engine.
just in case there are any metal flakes in there and whatnot.,

Dont sweat the redundancy of it, change out all the oil again the normal way and save yourself a hell of a mess.

 

i know people who change their filters every other change. i wouldn't recommend it, but it's what they do. if u pull that filter off before draining the pan it's going to make a huge mess....don't do it.

 

i'd advise draining oil. why? imagine a ton of oil comming out splashing

as u are doing this, when u noticed it is slowing down, then remove the filter if u like

this question is not specific to tC's...it the same for all motors...

you just remove the filter and put the new one on.
you will have some mess from the oil still in the filter and oil passage going to the filter.

the rest of your oil will be sitting nice and comfortable in your oil pan.

^^^^^^ what he said. If you get a nice size oil drain pan you can do this without a mess. Loosen the filter (while engine cold) and slowly unscrew until the oil starts coming out. Let it drain into pan until it stops flowing rapidly. Then slowly remove all the way and let it slowly down into the pan without turning the filter on its side. Wipe the mating surface of the filter boss and place a new filter on (put a light coat of oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter first). Hand tighten only but tighten as tight as you can (unless of course you are superman!!).
Crank engine and check for leaks. You will probably need to add about 1/3 to 1/2 qy of oil to top the level.

Taking an oil filter off any car does not drain ALL of the oil out, as oil would poor out only when the engine is running. Like dgHotLava and Newtmaker mentioned, just take the oil filter off and put a new one on and you can fill the new oil filter with oil before installing it. Thats what I do anyway on a regular oil change on cars where the oil filter goes on upwards.,

 

Oil filters are not designed to operate while submerged in oil. On the Scion the filter mounts to the same surface as the oil pan in a vertical orientation. When unscrewed, the filter will be full of oil and care must be taken not to tip it once it is free from the engine. As has been said in previous posts, the oil in the pan will stay in the pan even when the filter is removed.
