I saw In Engifineer's signature that he wants ideas for custom electronics.
Is it possible to copy the Audio controls in the steering wheel, and use the side opposite them to have controls for the heating. Like have up and down control fan speed and have mode control the feet, dash and defrost?
Its just as far a reach for the heating controls as it is audio and there is extra room on the wheel so is it possible?

I would really like to do it. I hate reaching. Im pretty lazy and sometimes I hit track down instead. I have to show my ID alot when going on base at 5am. and I always reach and miss.

hmm, I wonder if there is away to make it like on home stereos where when you press up and down on volume, a motor turns the control on the stereo.
The just have an up and down and have it rotate the heatin control to correspond.
Or maybe not owrry about the heat control. thats a big **** and easy to find in a hurry.

Yes, it is possible. The toughest part would be incorporating the controls and buttons into the wheel and making it look nice. The temp control can be done, but would be tricky if you leave the stock one. It would be easy to create a FET or standard PNP transistor control to simulate the temp **** that is connected to a push button. The key would be to make it so that when you used the **** again it would reset back to the value on the ****. But it would be even sexier to have a motorized **** similar to those on some home entertainment systems with remote. I already know the signal outputs from the temp control for another mod I am creating, hopefully I will have info on that in a week or so. The pushbuttons would be easy to simulate. Again, the trick would be getting all the buttons on the wheel and making them look good and easy to access while driving.
Now... the even better way
Remove the HVAC board and cut out the console for a touch screen. Then mount the board behind it and run the control outputs to it so it is all digitally controlled, then you could easilly place the buttons where you want. This is something I have tossed around, but have not gotten very far on due to family and career, but still on the radar.
But, thanks for the question, maybe I can work on the control part of it and figure out how to mount steering wheel controls later.

awesome. sounds good. If i would do it I would want something that matched the audio controls so the steering wheel look stock and uniform. A touch screen would be alittle much and not easily controlled on the go.
