Assuming DRL means "driving lights", when do you want the fog lights (soon to be driving lights for you) to be on? High beam only, low beam, or whenever any of the outside lights are on? Do you have OEM fogs? Don't know the laws for your state, but this may also be illegal but more information is needed to give a clear feedback.

DRL = Daytime Running Lights = On whenever the car is running.

Thank you, Chadfo. I was ready for the driving lights question, but will have to think on this one for a while. Even the highl/low beams will turn on when the engine is off. So these lights turn on whenever the car is running? Day, Night, always? Is there a separate switch for DRL's? Or are then just totally automatic? Don't want to put time into it and not understand the question completely. Thanks

DRLs are in essence controlled by the engine. When it's running the lights should be on and when it's not they should be off. Also they should shut off when the normal headlights are turned on. In this case they should revert to normal operation as fog lights.

Easiest way is to run a DRL relay with the fog light switch inline. That way you can turn the fogs on or off when you wanted, but they would automaticly come on with the ignition. I have my lowbeams set up as DRL. Also have my interior cathodes hooked up to the interior light switch so when ever the lights turn on the neons do too.

Still trying to figure out what you want. If you want them on whenever the parking lights are "on" (which is when you have the lighting switch manually rotated in any position: parking, low, high)) that is very easy. If you want them to automatically shut off when you turn "on" low or high beams, that is more difficult, but that can be done also. Or do you want them lit "as Chadfo stated" automatically whenever you start the car, and then shut off when the light switch is rotated to any position (parking, low, high)? Sorry about all the questions, but want to make sure that I advise you so that you can get what you want out of your fog lights. Enjoy the xB.

Cut the wire from the current fog light switch. Use a Bosch type relay. #85 to parking lights. #86 to ignition(off the fuse box). #87a. to fog light switch(fog light side of the cut wire) #87a to #86 and #30 to the fog lights ( wire that you cut).
The fog lights will come on with the ignition and go off any time the parking or headlights are on. The fog light switch will still work normally when the lights are on.

You can use ANY 12v 30amp relay. AutoZone has them for about $5.

Make sure that you get a 5 pin relay, some of the cheap ones that autozone sells only have four pins. the fifth pin allows you to have a "passthrough" so that when power is off to the relay your lights can still opperate off the factory switch

I used a 4 pin one from Autozone. The relays should be located next to the fog lights. I specifically did not want to allow the fogs to go on without at least the parking lights on. This way, I get the added benefit of the reminder chime if I leave them on ; )

Good info here...one question though, after reading Inazuma's write up, and looking at his pictures, it appears that the fogs come on but the parking lights do not.

How can you get it to where the fogs AND the parking lights come on when you flip the parking lights on?

Thanks

Inazuma just did a grounding of the black wire (this normally is grounded only when the headlights are turned on). This allows the fogs to be controlled with the fog switch anytime.

Inazuma was supposed to later put in a relay that would supply that ground to the switch anytime the ign was on. This would be your automatic DRL using the fogs, but he never finished the tutorial.

Now - one of these guys used the parking light wire to the relay, instead of the ign wire so that you could have parking and fogs for DRL and you would get a warning if you left them on (parking light warning), only now you have to routinely turn on your parking lights each time you start up.

Each method has it's +s and -s.

ok after reading all of the topic and the other one and clicking on the link in the other one and reading that I am really confused.

how do I wire the fogs to come on when I turn on the parking lights and stay on when I turn on the headlights? Pics would be great as well drawn or real

Thanx, Will
