Default What makes a quiter exhaust

Hey I just had a custom exhaust put in.
Magnaflow muffler and 2.5" piping from the header back eliminating the 2nd cat and the resonator.
It sounds really nice, just like a WRX but not as throaty, BUT, its really loud.
I think it got really loud due to the elimination of the cat mainly.
Is there anything I can do? Would welding the resonator back in there help the loudness?
I love my tone right now its just too loud!
Thanks

The resonator does little to effect the volume of the exhaust note. The removal of the cat is what caused the dramatic increase in noise. A resonator will help to clean up the tone of the exhaust but will not muffle it much if at all.

damn that sucks.
Well, I might be putting my stock cat back on. But I dont know yet. Oh i probably will just later on get a high flow cat and just deal with the exhaust for now.

puttin a resonator on will kill hte sound down by ALOT..

i had an exhaust put on my old car.. 2.25 inch piping leader to dual mufflers

no resonator/no cat

it was really loud, to the point i couldnt drive it w/o being pulled over

i put a resonator on, 18inch and it brought the noise level down alot... you could tell i still had an exhaust.. it was loud, but not that loud, so i suggest puttin a resonator on and see how you like it

what the hell, one guy up there said resonator doesnt do ****, and u say it does, I trust you ^ more because you actually had it done.
Now, who should I believe? I have the stock resonator still and I could put that on right now or should I get a bigger one? I do have 2.5" piping and the stock is 2.24, but he said he could extend the ends.
My car is so loud right now its pretty much unbearable especially at 3.5k and up.
Please let me know exactly what to do so I dont go wasting my money.
Thanks

TRUST ME, the sound will go down... you can use your stock to save you some money, they can extend the ends...

i have had it done... the instigator also knows what he is talking about.. as a resonator does not decreaase volume persay... but it does decrease vibrations... which contribute alot to the sound your getting

yeah a turbo will always kill the sound, and you get all the fun...or look into a silencer which is a nice cheap way to try....or as was posted reinstall the resonator because you should get a less harsh exhaust tone at least....and squishface, just because one person did it on ANOTHER car should not give you reason to believe them....if you install the resonator on this car.... your tc....like i said it will be loud, but a little less harsh....thats what you get when you remove catalytic convertors tho...try driving an rx7 with a straight pipe...theres a reason they call them bumble bee cars, now i know you said you like the tone the resonator shouldnt hurt that, altho instead of welding the resonator back in... i know magnaflow sells resenators so go to where you bought your exhaust and see if they cant get you one, it looks nicer imho had it ordered for my 240, looked real good

I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have an ANTI-resonator if I was going for a quieter exhaust.

I'm sure they understand what you mean.

There are some ways of making a quieter exhaust, found by simply searching. The short answer is either by increasing restriction (backpressure), by harmonic resonance (altering flow to alter phases in sound pulses, evening them out), or by the addition of mufflers which essentially pull the sound out of the exhaust pulse (much like a pistol silencer).

When you guys add a "resonator", your basically adding another very long "muffler" with a straight through design. Not much power loss since it flows gas well, but the holes in the side of the pipe (into the main chanbers) draw the sound out of the exhaust path. The sound ennergy goes to vibrating the inner insulation instead of vibrating the air outside the car.

daaamn you guys know your ****.
Thanks so much.
"Not much power loss since it flows gas well, but the holes in the side of the pipe (into the main chanbers) draw the sound out of the exhaust path." Now I totally understand how it works. I learned about sound waves in physics this year so i definately see how the holes will take in the sound.
Allright, I'm probably going to put back the stock resonator for now. But my exhaust is gonna be changed prolly in a few months because the pipe bends are not that great, and it hangs down a little low.
What they actually did was put the magnaflow muffler where the stock resonator was and then put the piping the rest of the way. So i'll probably put the resonator where the stock cat was.
Thanks again.

hey for the record i never said a resonator wouldmake it quiter....only a little smoother....but just in much less technical terms than turtle which by the way knows his sound and exhaust physics...heh

You might also want to try adding dynamat to the sheet metal directly above the exhaust.

I just added 2 sheets ( about $60 total ) to the sheet metal directly above the exhaust (under the little tool bin and spare tire) and it cut the interior exhaust drone in half. It was absolutley worth it, and added only about 5lbs to the car.

Oh yeah that is true.
Dynamat is expensive, it would definately be a project later on tho. Thanks for the idea.

No problem.

I'm tellin ya, it seriously works. Even though I only covered half of the rear section, it's like i'm driving a stock car with a little rumble.... outside, it's a different story i'm sure, but what do I care. Lot cheaper than a resonator

lol very tru.
I can put in my stock resonator and then do the dynamat stuff. I just got 200 bucks from this lady my mom knows as a graduation gift. So, time to do some work.
