Default 05 tC vs 05 Outback 2.5 XT - your thoughts

We have saved enough $ to buy either the new Outback 2.5 XT (MSRP: $29770 AT) or the cute lil tC (MSRP: $17265 AT). They are pretty much asking for MSRP. What would you buy? Would you save the extra $$$ for some mod. in the case of tC? The XT is from their STi group with 250HP

There are some really cool cars to be had for 29770 other than the new Outback (which is still pretty cool). I think that the tC is a better value for the money when you think of standard features, interior and exterior design and quality. However, the Outback is consistently rated the top small SUV/wagon and the redesign probably only made it a better vehicle. If you need AWD and cargo capacity, go with the Outback. If you want value and practically unlimited personalization potential, go with the tC. If it were me, I'd go with the tC, buy a s/c when it comes out and save the rest of the money. But that's just me. :D
Good luck with your decision.

Whats with all the people comparing two totally different cars? If your looking for a $30k car, then why are you even looking at a scion?

I would look into a v6 accord (6 speed), maxima. ____, $29 is approaching Evolution/Sti price range if your going for a fast car. For $30k you can buy one hell of a nice used c5 vette also.

As for modding the TC, 250hp will be pretty easy. Figure maybe $3500 in mods.

you have $30k and you're looking at scion ?
I don't recommend this car for someone who actually can afford $30k car.
Subaru outback is nice, but I prefer the new Subaru Legacy or STI.
I really love subaru since I used to have 02 WRX.
Their engine is strong, reliable, and great car with AWD.

Scion tC's handling will not go any closer to the subaru's.

Why Outback?
If you are looking for outback that means you are into activity and stuff

You got the AWD system, room, space, lifted suspension and ofcourse the all mighty 250HP turbo charged engine

Compare to tC... I don't think it can get you through rally like roads and climb hills and carry snow boards. And probably handles like crap compare to subaru's AWD system.

Price don't matters to you I guess... It is what you need to do with your car

with that commute I'd get a prius Or maybe an insight.

Seriously that outback would be nice, do u need the extra room? is this car going to be a sporty car or just a commuter, if its just a commuter go for the tc, if this is the family vehical go for the outback.

Believe it or not, both tC and Outback provide ROOM for me to "sleep" in the car in case i get stuck at work late at night. If i put more hours into work, i may just buy an XT for fun and tC as a commuter as you suggested.

Somehow, i feel more fun reading tC threads than actually buying one. :D

i would buy the outback XT for sure. it's way more powerful than the tC and it has all wheel drive and is built a little more solid. i love scions but i have a lot of respect for subarus, especially their turbo models. i had a chance to drive the new 250hp legacy, and it's ridiculously quick. a lot faster than the wrx. anyway, you can't compare both cars because the price of the subaru is almost double that of the scion. that's like comparing a civic and a BMW 3 series.

Default Hey! Something I actually know a LOT about!

I have been tracking the new Legacy/Outback for over a year now, and was going to buy one as soon as it came out. I love my 02 Legacy GT, except for the power. So for whoever said "why are you looking at a $16k car when you can buy $28k, easy: CAN and SHOULD are different. I've pretty much decided to keep my Legacy and buy a MR2/Miata in a year or two and switch off summers/winters. But anyway...

The Outback has the huge sunroof, similar to the tc. If you want/need AWD, though, you'll never regret the Outback once the snow hits. Do what I do: ask myself, while in a snowstorm, "am I glad I have this car? Should I have bought that Mercedes c230k?" You'll be glad you're with AWD.

Of course, if there's no snow in your neck of the woods, well, I'm not really sure why you'd want an Outback to begin with. Whatever your situation, it comes down to: Would you rather have the Outback, or the tc with $12,000 sitting in an envelope in the glovebox?

two great cars.. I'm likin' the new outback. In this case, comparing the cars is almost necessary b/c of what will suit you best. If you're doin the whole family thing (or at least more than 2 people on long trips) you're definitely better off w/the outback.

I was considering a tC, but ended up getting a 2004 Forester XT 5-speed. What a freakin' car. Buying experience was pretty good and hassle-free.

Seems like getting the Scion you want and getting it the way you want is hit-or-miss. I'm kinda glad I didn't wait around and get the tC.
