Default Cat-back vs. Axle-back vs. Manifold-back

Can someone in a nutshell tell me what the performance differences are between the 3?
Is one preferable for stick vs. automatic?
Is an axle-back more just for sound?
Which is most bang for buck?

The idea is less resistance and smoother ehxaust...

The manifold back is preferred..

The cat-back is second...

The axle back is never really preferred :D But if you get it, it would be third.

The more piping that's changed out for performance piping, the less resistance, the better flow.

Really, don't expect more than 2 HP difference from the different levels, unless you change the piping diameter (to 3 in).

Now a full exhaust, that's a different story...

Even then. You don't need a 3" unless you are pushing more than 300-350hp. Otherwise 2 1/4 is more than enough for the power these engines will make. If you plan on boosting than I would probably go to 2 1/2. Any bigger and you will lose to much backpressure.

not true at all, if you have the correct back pressure, and mufflers, all of them sound the same. If you were to listen to all of the systems that I have done , they all sound deep and low and very very similiar. Now if I could just get a tC in the family , I would show off more exhaust knowledge.

Back to the topic:
The axle back is for inexpensive performance and great sound. 2HP

The cat back is for people who want a little more HP than the axle back and not pay a lot for it. 4+HP

The manifold back is for people who know they want more power out of the box and are considering adding headers to finish it off for no delay in power! 6+HP

(Not including headers, intake and or sparkplugs)

I wouldn't go to a 3" exhaust on a stock 1.5l unless you did a major rebuild and were running a turbo w/ crazy boost. If you just plan on going with a CAI and a header, like from DC Sports, I would get a 2.25" exhaust all the way thru.

I have the Injen short ram, DC Sports header, and Tanabe axleback. I';m perfectly happy w/ this setup as it has just enuff passing power at 80 mph, and I actually hear the air being sucked by the short ram more than I hear the exhaust.

Stylis, Can you PM me the cost of your manifold back setup? I have an auto xb. I have the DC sports header already and need to finish this thing off. I don't want loud though. I'm glad to hear that more power doesn't mean more noise.

Thanks.

Not loud, its just that mr.showpaojoe has no power!

The manifold back system is 500.00 plus shipping. A very powerful piece of exhaust experimentation that I have come up with. Works great and is deep sounding.

3 $111 noise violation tickets...you tell me. It's not as loud as race setup imports because I have lost serious torque. My car is slow as ***...can't burnout...takes like 4k rpm's just to get it rolling.

scions = money pits

so the manifold back hooks right up to either the stock or aftermarket header?

So, the manifold back is only as loud as the axle back on the auto tranny?

Stylis, if you did the install how long would it take for the manifold back? How long does it take to install the cat back? How much is your cat back just for autos, if youhave one? So many choices, so many questions...

it takes 2 hours for the manifold back system to be installed at the scion central. One hour, if I ship it to you to install yourself at home. And I recomend that you get the magna flow cat back if you really want a catback.

:D Gabe, the auto Scion exhaust looks better and better. Does that take long to install? I really want a rolled edge tip tho! Can you do this too? I like the rolled edge tips you have on-line.

A rolled tip for an auto axle back...one of the angled ones on Precisionmuffler.com. Those are nice...
