Cat-back vs. Axle-back vs. Manifold-back

scions = money pits

what do you have for your exhaust system again?

dam your right joe, that xA has some nice fattyy tread for the quater!
i don't think you can get a cat-back exhaust for the scions. unless it's custom, cause you'd have to cut and weld. the cat on our cars is built into some piping (next time you're under the car take a look). thats the reason for all the axle back exhausts. i talked to one of the toyota reps at the tc training i went to. he said that they did it that way for longevity, so that there were less hangers. poo on them. he also said that the trd muffler still made good numbers, but he didn't tell me what they were.....

Gabe is the Man and his experience should be pretty close to the last word on exhausts for our little engines that could. I want to relate my experience with the Auto Axle back from PrecisionMuffler.
Even with just a Blitz ShortRam Intake and the AutoAxle Back, performance-wise I was so damn surprised at the extra punch I was getting! Lower RPM shifting, better feeling torque, all the good stuff, it was awesome for what I was running.
But the sound...now I think it is probably because of the combination of intake and exhaust but, I wimped out and had to get rid of the ShortRam.
The sound was fine and sexy at idle, just what you would want: low sounding rumble that would warm up to a low toned purr at ignition. Ramping up through first, second and third was damn sexy too
The purr would go from low rumble (barely noticeable) to a deep growl that was tuff and boss and all that good ____...You wouldn't think it was an econo-four banger to hear it get to third gear!
Getting to fourth was still bearable up around 55 mph with only a slight rise in volume (you could still hear the OEM sound system at volume level 37!) but, when you went to 65 the sound was noticeable (you would have to crank-up the stereo volume) and then would settle down once the rpm's stayed within just under 4K. Mash the pedal or need to get speed fast or go uphill and a vibration could be felt in your skull that could kill brain cells I'm sure...the sound would level out at times sometimes at 4K RPM sometimes at 4700 RPM but, it was hard to manage keeping it there (for me.)
Now this is all fine and good if you are young, and the only person in the vehicle but, if this is the car you ride in with your older relatives, friends or girlfriend it seems to get worse (probably because the engine works harder.)
Gabe and I had a conversation about it and I understand the explanation of it all but, I couldn't live like that for too long. So, I put in the stock airbox and everything is all fine and good. I'm thinking that the autoBoxes have a harder time managing the effort of the engine than manny drivers. And your experience could be different with the combo of intake/exhaust/header you choose, this is just my experience.
The exhaust sure is pretty and you really have to decide for yourself if the performance edge is where you want to live or not.
I decided you see the exhaust more than you see the intake so, I wanted to keep the exhaust. For me it is a work of art from a truly Custom Scion shop and innovator.
This is not a slam of any kind more of a pitch for Stylis and his work than anything else. he's a good guy and wouldn't do anyone wrong...

not true at all, if you have the correct back pressure, and mufflers, all of them sound the same. If you were to listen to all of the systems that I have done , they all sound deep and low and very very similiar....(Not including headers, intake and or sparkplugs)
