ok, so i've managed to acquire about 4-5 spider-chips
and cracks on my windshield within a few months..
its ___ and i hate scion for that..
BUT i love my scion..

i recently got a PPG brand windshield(new).. they usually do
all the honda cars(oem).. well a pingpong sized rock hit my car
harder than anything i have ever witnessed. i thought i was gonna die
but nothing is on my windshield! not even a chip! just a lil pitt..

i was soooo surprised.. thank god i went with PPG.. i lost trust in
toyota the first time so i was reluctant to get another one..
i got a PPG one installed with a NEW weather stripe(at my house)
for like 520 bucks or so.,

if anybody gets a new xb glass, get PPG, it looks 99.9% like the oem one
so its all good!
just thought i'd share with u all.. hopefully i can save a few asses...

Good to know, i've been wondering about all these cracked window horror stories and the crappy quality of the OEM replacement.

One question though, why would my ___ be up by the windshield while I'm driving? I had my cranial optorectumy when I was in the service!!!  :P

Wish I wouold have known about this before I had mine replaced through my insurance company. I'm noe to this so what is the diference between the 2. Is the PPG made of plex or something?? Well thanks if anyone can answer this and thanks for the info too.

just for your information PPG is THE SAME as toyota. PPG make most all glass for toyota. My pop's 4RUNNER from the factory says "Toyota" on the right bottom corner, then below that it says PPG. Its funny, the only aftermarket windshield for the xB is made by PPG, and the "Toyota" windshield is over 100 dollars more. My windshield is on order, and it will be a "toyota". I think with your PPG, and the rock that hit it -WAS PLAIN LUCK!!--my crack started from a chip by the VIN #. Its now split in two directions!! Yesterday, A rock hit my windshield ( as big as the last one) dead center of my windshield. Just a little nick was left....Its Luck- thats the only way to slice it- GLASS is GLASS, no matter who its from- the only thing that can differ is the ammount off tint, and or a tint strip...

hahajoey
07-21-2004, 07:57 AM
i beg to differ.
the guy who installed the glass told me PPG makes most honda's and some toyota's.
there was no place on my oem windshield that containted PPG markings or labels?
does yours?

im not turning this into an argument but im just telling u how it is..
AND the PPG costs less than the toyota one..

i just thought i'd share my own experiences to the benefit of others.
if u can prove that oem glass IS the same as the PPG class being sold in
stores, ill eat my words

The bottom line is GLASS is GLASS! I did not say my xB's windshield said PPG. I said "PPG make most all glass for toyota. My pop's 4RUNNER from the factory says "Toyota" on the right bottom corner, then below that it says PPG.

The only difference between the two is the name- a "Toyota" windshield cost more (as I stated before) because of the name. a PPG is THE SAME!

For you to say a PPG winshield is stronger or better in anyway to a Toyota is rediculous!!!
PROVE THAT!

well the biggest rock i've ever hit AND at the highest velocity didn't crack anything.
whereas i had about 4 spider cracks and a big ___ line crack from little things...

im just gonna shutup and let u win this pointless dispute.
'ok dude, ppg is toyota and toyota is ppg'

ive always hyad this problem with toyota, the only toyota windshields that havnt broken are my tundra and xb but the tundra does have a little chip i think was done perposely, anyways on really hot days keep atleast 1 window slightly open just a little, this should help.

Joey....

Interesting that you started the thread....I too had a crack on my factory windshield...The funny thing is that the cracked stemmed from a rock pit less then 1mm in diameter and to top it off, it cracked when the car was sitting still!

I had a PPG glass installed....and while driving to vegas for the extreme autofest i heard the loudest PLAKK on my windshield...Im like WTF! Im on my way to the show and i get a crack..PHUCK....I also saw a slight glare that appeared to be a crack...So I thought what im i going to do?? I guess just put a decal over it! haha...

Anyways..at the show, i was cleaning my windshield and amazingly it was a bug that hit the windshield and the glare was just the guts.... but i swear, it sounded worse than any rock that had hit it....

Well my point for rambling on, for some reason i have to believe that the PPG aftermarket windshield holds a higher standard then the factory glass...Whether the factory glass is made by PPG or not, the PPG aftermarket seems a lot stronger.

well i just thought since there are so many threads/posts/complains about the xb's damn glass being crappy... i wanted people to know!

i paid 525 installed including a NEW weather strip(40 bucks from the dealer)
from this place i was recommended to.... they sell the PPG branded glass
and i'm very pleased with the results.. i can't really say that about my oem glass
cuz i had cracks in it after 3 weeks of purchase.. then more and more and more till it
got so bad, it was practically unsafe to drive.

the dealer sells the glass for 505 i believe or somehting like that + tax + labor + weather strip.. you can believe what u want(you non-believers) but PPG has made
me a very happy camper, maybe the oem(ppg or not) is a different batch?

i do see differences in the patterns on the black dots on the edges and what not. thats why i think the oem one isn't ppg,...

I think it's a fair statement to say that going to a 3rd party for a windshield replacement will save you quite a bit compared to the dealer. My wife called Saturn for a windshield on her VUE last week, and the dealer straight out told her "go to the place around the corner, we use them and just add on extra profit." True enough, that place was around $100 less than the dealer, and the dealer doesn't even do the install (in my instance, yours of course may vary).

good to know. we got 2 huge chips in our windshield in one week. it looks like we were in a shootout.

Not all glass is the same -- that's like saying all tire compounds are the same. Different material, heating process and shaping techniques are used by different companies.

There are huge variations in quality and durabilty between manufacturers -- it's why I refused to take a third party manufacturer's rear window for my Volvo when my neighbor smashed it. Do some research on it and you'll be surprised how technically advanced windshield development is.

07-22-2004, 07:58 PM
i agree with yoshi completely....

but u gotta understand.. lots of ignorance and 'i think i know' bull____ goes on.

the info i provided was my own first hand experience as well as what the
glass repair company/and installer told me as well as a local toyota/scion dealership

Thanks for the tip. PPG makes great stuff. I'm not sure who makes the xB windshield though. From past toyotas I've driven, the windshield would state Toyota and PPG or just PPG. The one we have only states Toyota.

i am having my windshield replaced on sat. by safelite. i don't know if they use ppg glass but it will cost me 306.00 installed + 44 for oem molding.

the funny thing is, i have been hit by a number of bugs and rocks and never got a chip or crack.
i parked my car in the driveway and my nephews' baseball hit the glass edge by the pass. a-pillar and blew out the windsield.
talk about a one-in-a-million hit.

and for the debate of glass is glass. i say BS. our windshield glass starts with sand and depending on the source of sand the glass will have different characteristics.

then it gets layered with plastic, again different source means differen properties.
then more glass.

now, in japan (where the xb is made) they will have a different supply than cars made in the usa (where your dads truck was made).

with all that said, the galss has to meet certain safety tests. the ppg glass and non-ppg glass will both have to pass the same tests but can react differently. one can chip and the other crack but so long as it doesn't blow through it passes.

Its not the glass its the angle of the windsheild. The xB's window is a lot more close to being straight up than most all cars out there. xA's glass is more angled. Can't say I have any cracks or anything because rocks will bounce off the glass easier when its at a more extreme angle.

I really wondered how much a windshield would cost to be installed because i have a long crack that happened a few months ago. Here are a couple of quotes i came across installed with tax.

Glass Pro - $258.30 without new moulding Maybe $300 with moulding ?

Safelite Auto Glass - $335.96 with new moulding

Triumph Auto Glass - $378 with moulding i believe

Brite Glass - $450.59

Seems that the windshield is on backorder in many places. I'm going with Glass Pro since it's the cheapest in town (Reno, NV) and they ordered the last windshield from a warehouse in Sacramento. Get a few quotes before diving in. You could save over 100 bucks.

What im about to say is just my personal oppinion so take it as just that. I called safelite and they installed my new glass for $175. Looks just like the OE. have had some small rocks hit it and nothing. My OE glass was broken by a large peice of salt from one of our wonderful michigan county trucks. The safelite glass has taken twice the woopin the OE did and so far so good. You can argue all you want that ppg is better but the fact of the matter is i can buy 3 widshields for the price of your PPG. Ill take that risk. Hopefuly this is helpful to someone.

My OEM had several large spiders that never did spread but they were in my line of vision so I had it replaced.
The 2nd windshield was PPG and it lasted a year and a half with several dings but one turned into a large crack.
The 3rd windshield was a Safelite. It didn't last 2 months. It had on very small ding that turned into a long crack.
I requestd PPG for my 4th windshield because it seemed to hold up the best.

thanks for the tips. i had heard that PPG and Fuyao were the way to go. that others didn't fit properly.
i'm going to give the scion people a call and get a case going b/c mine was not a chip to crack deal. regardless, i will have to fix it soon as i have come to understand (yes sir mr officer sir) it is not ok to have a cracked windshield.
