Fingers crossed - dealership fixed rattle
My tC has rattled in the back pretty much since I picked it up new from the dealership a year ago ('06 manual in Nautical blue). They diagnosed the likely problem back in April, but I'm a procrastinator, so I only just got round to having them fix it.
The rattle was a real sharp-sounding one. I had always assumed it was either plastic or metal on metal making the noise. I was wrong - when I originally took it in, they did pretty much what everyone else here has been talking about, checking the trim and so forth. After tearing the insides out and shoving 'em back in to no effect, they finally came to what sounded like a completely crazy conclusion (try saying that 3 times fast!)...
In their professional opinion, it was the glass on the hatch. They hypothesised that the glass wasn't bonded quite right to the hatch, and it was rattling somewhere. To fix it, they proposed pulling the entire pane of glass off and refitting it, presumably glued correctly this time. How they came up with that idea, I'll never know.
I just picked the car up this evening, and I didn't hear a single rattle on the way back home. I'll get a better feel for whether it's really fixed when I run over the bumps on the way to work in the morning, but I'm really hopeful that did it.
Anyway, I don't think I've seen this particular approach to killing tC rattles in the forum before, so I figured that I would post it in case it helps anyone else out.
Oh, and as an aside, the whole incident has renewed my appreciationfor my tC. The dealership loaned me a Corolla for a few days while they worked on my car, and while I'm sure that a Corolla isn't a bad car, getting back into my tC has never felt better.
