So I have been pricing wheels and tires and noticed that dropping down to a 17 I can save anywhere from 200-500 dollars and wheel and tire packages. The question is will it really make a huge difference in looks?
I really want a lighter wheel and wider rubber, is this my best bet?
also, if you want to keep the same rolling diameter so your odometer/speedo work as intended then you'll be increasing the sidewall of the tires which aren't beneficial for performance.

I agree with CementTC. Whatever weight you loose with the 17 inch wheel, you'll add quite a bit back with heavier tires. Shop around, you can find 18" wheels and tires for good prices. The wheel wells are huge on our car, I think you'll regret 17". Are your stock tires still in good condition or are they worn out? If not just reuse them. Buy the wheel you want, then save up for the tires you want. It will be worth it in the end.
the reason I was looking into 17's was a story that was in Grassroots motorsports, they Had MS3, which like our tc comes stock with a 225/45/18, and changed out to a 235/45/17 and gained .2 seconds a lap and gained a better street ride comfort. I'm not tracking my car much, the occasional auto-x and some time at the dragstrip(even though I'm slow). She is my daily and my wife is complaining About how much I spent on tires for this car over my previous ( VW Rabbit with 225/40/17) amd that is soooo much stiffer.
